Anyone ever left a job because of the people?

Should probably rephrase, colleagues as individuals all seem like nice people however the atmosphere/dynamic of the office is just...dead.

Starting to think I just don't see myself here much longer.

Nobody talks, ever. I've stopped saying hello/goodbye as I never get it from anyone else and when they do reply it's like i've asked them a really odd question. Only 7 in the team so doesn't have the usual hum/buzz of a big open plan office - which is fine, i've worked in small teams and offices before - it just gets me down so much that I don't speak to anyone (bar DH/friends over text at lunch) from 8am-6pm four days a week.

I know work is work, it's not for constant chit chat but i've never worked anywhere where at the very least people don't say "Welcome back, did you have a nice time?" when someone has been on holiday for 2 weeks (this happened yesterday) or "Are you feeling better?" (when someone returned from being off with Aussie flu). I asked both of these questions when I saw said individuals in the kitchen and they seemed happy to chat, it just seems that when they're all together nobody wants to be the one to talk? There's no big, bad Director in the room, we're all on one of two layers of seniority.

The role itself is fine, a step up from what I was doing within the same field.

Happy to be told I'm BU, thought I was a tough old bird but am left feeling so down and dread going in to the morgue office.

I have only left two jobs for actual career progression, the rest have all been because of awful management/toxic environment.

So, yes.

phoenix1973 · 08/02/2018 13:21

Yeah. Loads.

You're right Glenscoconut, life is indeed too short.

It's only a one-year contract in the first instance, i'm not even half way through yet but will start keeping my eyes open for other things.

Further grumbles - the office is tiny and has no windows ergo no fresh air or natural light. Definitely not good for the mind, body or soul.

Yes I did.
Pay was good, hours fitted around pick up from school (early start though), work content was interesting but the atmosphere was soul destroying. No one spoke unless it was a meeting.
People also complained about me making a brief 30 sec phone call in the kitchen.
I could not bear it any longer and had to resign. It was just not worth it- family and friends noticed how miserable I was and I'd had enough.

Never looked back- so go for it if you can afford it/find another job.

Yes I have done this, best move ever, now work in an environment with supportive colleagues, actually look forward to going into work now.

What are these jobs where the office is all quiet? I would like am that job, I find it impossible to concentrate with a bustly busy chatty place....

Troels · 09/02/2018 08:18

Yes I have. Life it too short to work with horrible people.

Darkbendis · 09/02/2018 08:22

Almost. Years ago. Fortunately the company offered a lot of us redundancy and I was really happy to put my name on the list. I was pretty close from walking out of that job, even though I couldn't afford it, it was that bad!

TenancyTroublesAgain · 09/02/2018 08:55

Yes, due to one guy harrassing me daily in full view of everyone about things that were both inaccurate and not his concern even if they were true, which they weren't. Sometimes under the guise of a joke, other times not. Manager played it off and didn't have the guts to defend me despite agreeing with me behind closed doors and having no concerns with my work themselves...

I think the guy had a superiority complex and was trying to make me look stupid because despite being the youngest, it was my job to oversee his work at times.

whoareyoukidding · 09/02/2018 09:00

I once worked for a manager who was more stupid than I am, and I just couldn't bear it. I had to leave in the end.

CoraPirbright · 09/02/2018 09:29

Yup - l left for just the reason you describe. Went from old job (chatting but working hard, happy buzzy atmosphere) to a new office was silent as the grave. Lasted about 2 months - was so miserable!!!
