AIBU?

To think a month is too long.

I've been in consistent pain for over a month now.
I've constantly had a headache. It varies from a dull ache to a searing blistering headache but it's always there. I can pin point exactly where the pain is coming from because the pain radiates from there. I've seen Dr after Dr and chiropractor and it won't go away. In exhausted and my work is suffering because I can't concentrate. the Dr has put me on various pain killers which don't even touch the pain. Aibu to think a month long head ache is too long. I have a neurology appointment but it's not till march. I don't think I can take another month of this.

When I was getting headaches at the base of the skull/ top of my neck, my GP said the muscles were really tense and put me on a low dose of diazepam. Within a few days the headaches went! Maybe worth an ask?

Is it all on one side?
Is your eye on that side affected?
Could be a cluster headache maybe if it's that bad. They call those suicide headaches and I had them the year of the riots, and I totally see why they call them that. I lived in fear for nearly a year of the little shadows I got turning into a full blown episode. Luckily they haven't been back but I noticed Diet Coke gave me the shadows so there might be something in that dr above telling you to cut out Pepsi.

I've completely cut it out. I only drink water. That's it, every time I think I might not be getting a headache, an hour later it's a full blown headache. It's making me tired and I'm about ready to cut my head off -_-

Thank you. It's pretty bad. I cried at work the other day, I'm not a crier, I can count on one hand how many times I've cried in the last 2 years. I think it was a mixture of the pain and frustration :(

Good god! If your in that much pain then go to A&E please!

I have been experiencing pain from a similar place and it's because of pelvis - as I am currently pregnant. Had something similar years ago and only one osteo could fix it, out of so many people I tried, and pain was gone in one session. Can you get a recommendation for a good osteo? Have you been pregnant within the last year as that might be the cause that hasn't been resolved? I really hope you can find the cause and cure because it sounds utterly crippling, exhausting and expensive.

I don't think it warrants a&e? I don't really want to waste their time with something the Dr could sort, it's just the Dr doesn't seem to know whats going on.its very frustrating

That's exactly what A&E is for though.
Pain that's affecting your life and making you cry really isn't wasting their time!

TheChildrensPresenter · 08/02/2018 08:11

They also have specialist equipment to look for other potential sources of the pain.

No, my youngest is 7 so no pregnancy in the last year. I think I'm just going to have to keep going back and mention the things in this thread.

I'd second an osteopath. Which area are you?

As a migraine sufferer I am amazed you have been prescribed codeine and cocodamol as they are notorious for reducing muscular pain such as back pain but will cause killer headaches or migraines at the same time. I was prescribed codeine after a knee operation and I ended up in a vicious cycle, never had so many headaches and migraines in all my life. Not to mention horribly addicted.

Now I am off the codeine and take sumatriptan and it's been a lifesaver.

I think you should push for the further tests to be done asap. Due to the level of migraines I was having, I had a brain MRI scan and I had peace of mind there was nothing nasty going on as all tests came back clear.

The next time you get a bad one come on OP, phone 111. They will be able to give you an idea if it warrants A&E.

Your GP needs to be doing more, I'm sorry you're going through this its awful. I had the same with my GP after having headaches for so long. I went to get eyes tested and they rushed me straight to hospital as I had symptoms of a brain tumor (thanks for not picking up on that GP!) luckily it wasn't a brain tumor, I have a medical condition where my brain produced too much spinal fluid but the optician / hospital was shocked when the GP hadn't picked it up .

I have lived with this type of headache for decades so have great sympathy

Mine are down to musculoskeletal problems and fibromyalgia

I eventually found my fabulous physio who along with doing the usual physio stuff also does reflexology which has been a game changer

If you are struggling I recommend a multiple approach, make another appointment with the dr but in the mean time consider a pillow change to one recommended for neck care (I use a sealy posturepaedic one) and look up foot reflexology which you can try yourself

Another bite for the osteo. I had a similar issue for months. Eventually saw a neuro, had MRI etc. Was told there was ‘no cause’ and was given various things to try and prevent it. They muted it but it wasn’t perfect. Oddly when I was pregnant it was much better but crept back in as my DS got older. I started seeing an osteopath who also does acupuncture for over a year now. I have no issues. At all. I go fortnightly and it’s amazing. Definitely worth a try.

I was also going to suggest Syndol.

As a life-long migraine sufferer, this was the only pain-killer which sorted out my dreadful tension headaches when I was sitting exams.

Sunglasses might also help a bit.

*vote.

Should add I waited 6 months for a neuro appointment - a month is amazing. So in answer to your question, in context YABU, but in terms of how you feel YANBU.

May not be relevant for you, but have you tried decongestants? Couple of years ago I had a horrendous headache that wouldn't go despite huge amounts of pain killers. I took a decongestant (even though I didn't have a cold) and it went. Decongestants are now my first port of call for a bad head.

Areyou sure it's not your posture making your neck and shoulder muscles tense? That can radiate to the back of the head.

Migraines are at the front I thought, usually on one side.

Could you try out some stretching exercises you can find online? If they make it better you could ask for physio.

picklejimmy · 08/02/2018 08:39

I will try that!
I didn't mean is a month too long to wait for the appointment, I know I'm lucky to have one so quick. I'm just frustrated that it's still going on

OP, in the meantime, please try acupuncture. I suffered with long term headache, and really in my ignorance didn't think for a minute that it could possibly help me, but I was desperate for some relief.
It turned out to be my neck and shoulders, plus anxiety over the prolonged headache, and helped me enormously. From time to time, I still have it, and I'm so glad I tried it.
I hope you are feeling much better, very soon. 💐

I would try acupuncture and a reflexologist while I was waiting for the neurologist appointment.

Try an osteopath and avoid chiropractors like the plague, it could be nerve compression radiating from your spine at cervical joints 1 and 2 and harsh manipulation from a chiropractor could make it worse whereas osteos are i think very gentle. Is there a local health food shop which has an ad board, worth a try if you can't get a recommendation. And I'd try acupressure before acupuncture as I had a bad reaction to the latter. Reflexology is great too, get a book from the library or The Works.

Just to add that the muscle relaxant was removed from Syndol a few years back, so as far as I'm aware it's just overpriced cocodamol now. Unless it's been changed back in the last year?
