AIBU- bad highlights?

I am completely happy to be told I am being unreasonable and unrealistic. So please be honest.

I had highlights done last week (£75 half head) and I am not totally happy with them. I feel you can still see the root line from before (it's like 2 inches from my scalp).

It's not that the hairdresser hasn't got close enough to the root on some parts, but it looks like she hasn't put enough in? She in fact did put a lot of foils in- so maybe they have been done too thinly?

I have fine hair but it's very thick/lots of it.

In these photos it is freshly washed and dried hair- it just looks A bit cheap and greasy looking (it's not greasy in the slightest and doesn't usually when my usual hairdresser does it. But I think the way she has spaced out the highlights makes it look bad.)

It actually looked ok in the salon lights, it's just in darker lighting at home it looks..... Naff...

If you are a hairdresser, would it offend you if I emailed the salon to show/explain my issue? I worry that if I just walk into salon they will HmmConfused as it doesn't look bad in their bright lights.

What do you think? WIBU to email them and politely complain? Or am I being unrealistic?

You can still see the line BUT to be honest, it looks like you might have been over-highlighted the time before, to the point where it's starting to look like an all-over colour, which normal highlights are not going to match.

I would still ask for a refund though, unless they managed your expectations that it was over-done before so normal highlights even properly done would be no perfect match for a more solid looking previous set of highlights.

Again, at least it looks reasonable and the blonde colour is a nice shade.

I agree that the rest of your hair looks over highlighted.
In the second photo of your first post, the ends of your hair are almost white

I agree with Heart. When you've been having highlights for ages you inevitably get this as the older hair becomes over coloured and it starts to look like block colour.

Lilonetwo · 17/02/2018 21:27

Waaa I'm so frustrated.

Hmm I understand what you mean but I don't think it's been over highlighted in the past though. I had highlights done in October buy previously to that i had it dark (darker than my natural colour) on top with balyage ends.

I don't know, I'm not a hairdresser but it looked a lovely ashy/creamy even medium blonde. Now it's just got white stripes on top.

I agree, it doesn't look awful but it doesn't look like a £75 job.

My 3 year search for a local colourist continues....

SleepFreeZone · 17/02/2018 21:32

I agree with the comments re. The rest of your hair looking a block colour. I actually really like the contrast of the slightly darker hair against the highlights. I would let that grow and keep the highlights going and get the overpricessed hair cut off.

blackchina · 17/02/2018 21:34

Looks the same sorry.

Boulshired · 17/02/2018 21:47

My hair became over highlighted so the hair dresser adds a third of my natural colour every so often. Your ends do seem too blonde that highlighting the roots will not create an equal colour.

Not sure anyone would actually be interested. But thought I would share my update Grin

I asked for a quick toner to be put on (by my good old usual hairdresser, who is too far away normally) and I think it had hugely improved my hair. It looks more even and smooth.

I had a feeling it was the toner that was the magic ingredient. Now I am really glad I have discovered this!

I asked and she used L'Oréal Richesse golden blonde, mixed with light blonde. Unsure of what peroxide/developer but it was only left on for a couple of minutes.

If i was doing your hair is be doing back to back foils, prob with 2-3 colours one being close to root colour scattered in. And instead of taking parting section from front to crown I'd just continue up both sides til they meet at parting. That stops the stripey look. Fucking hate stripey highlights. And 75 for half head?? Fuck I need to up my prices!!

Hairgician · 23/02/2018 10:11

Toner has helped massively I see. Much better!

Sunnyshiny · 23/02/2018 10:41

hairgician sounds like you know what you are talking about! (I wish I did!)

I'd like to buy toner to do at home myself. I might pop to Sally's and see if they will sell me the loreal richesse toner (+ peroxide of the appropriate %)

DeliberatelyAwkward · 23/02/2018 11:43

Oh that’s better! OP, I now want your hair :)

HippyHippieWannabe · 23/02/2018 12:33

The problem isn't with how many highlights have been done this time...the problem you have is that your hair has been highlighted / coloured so many times in the past that there isn't enough darkness left in your hair to blend with the root; so unless you a had a million high lights it will never blend.

If the hairdresser was any good then when you were in the chair the first time they would of explained this to you and done a low light as well as a highlight to blend the root colour down and create a less harsh appearance.

HippyHippieWannabe · 23/02/2018 12:35

Also just seen the update; the toner has helped massively.

LemonShark · 23/02/2018 12:58

Looks nice! Did you get your money back?

ShoutyMcShoutFace · 23/02/2018 13:32

Absolutely love your hair as it is now. The colour is fab and can't see any roots at all.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 23/02/2018 13:40

I had the same happen to me when I moved new hairdresser couldn't get the colour right. Once I'd spoke to old hairdresser and got the toner info off her it's bk to normal

Sunnyshiny · 23/02/2018 17:25

Grin I'm so pleased it's pretty much how it used to look.
Hippie I didn't want low lights as I have almost always had this colour hair for years, so didn't really even consider having low lights as I like it fairly smooth and even looking. (I usually have 2 bleach:1 tint)

Lemon shark no I didn't get my money back. I just went to another salon to get toner (another £30 uggg). But now I know what toner my old hairdresser uses I can ask my new (local) one to do something similar...

Shouty and deliberately thank you :-) it's horrible when you hate your hair. So thanks for the nice comments. I think a bad colour is worse than a bad cut!

Partypopper123 · 23/02/2018 19:43

The toner has made a massive difference.
However I think the issue is you've had loads of highlights previously and now the colour is a 'block' further down your hair, which is why the new highlights look as though they don't blend in as well.
