To be nervous about coil fitting?

Worrying about having a mirena coil fitted tomorrow. I'm having a smear at same time as it's due anyway. Will the coil fitting be much different?

My top tip - get someone to drive you!! I can’t believe they let me drive home Confused

dementedpixie · 07/02/2018 22:15

Really? I went to the supermarket and drove home after mine was fitted

Fianceechickie · 08/02/2018 10:41

Doctor just rang to reschedule it! Got myself all psyched up for nothing!

The cramping starts about two hours after fitting in my experience and was much worse than the fitting itself (which takes about 30seconds)

So there is time to get him, make a hot water bottle, some chocolate and get into bed before it starts. And then it is all over a few hours later.

I've had 4 Mirenas OP, and they are fine to have fitted. The other thread had some very bizarre women posting they'd had theirs done under GA which really didn't help the OP I would imagine, so I wouldn't read it!!! .... christ knows how they gave birth Grin. It takes around 10/15 minutes, wear a pad as you can bleed a bit after from your cervix, and you will be fine - whenever you get it done. The most uncomfortable part is the speculum tbh, so very little different to a smear.

I was suppose to have one but ended up getting myself into a state worrying and having Injection instead. It's been great for me.

ThomasShelbysBunnet · 08/02/2018 11:01

I had one unexpectedly fitted at the end of October - I'd gone for an appt to be sterilized and was talked into trying the mirena first.

I'm not going to lie to you, after 2 sections it was the worst pain I'd felt and I echo the posters saying i can't believe they let me drive afterwards. I called my husband in tears outside the house because I could hardly walk due to the pain.

However.....it has revolutionized my life. It took a good week to stop cramping but now I don't need to worry about taking pills, I've had no periods since, and I'll be having another when my 5 years is up although I might take a tramadol first

MrsMaxwell · 08/02/2018 11:05

Mine was fine am going tomorrow morning.

Don’t worry about it, having a filling is much worse.

sourpatchkid · 08/02/2018 13:41

Isn't the human body odd that it can hurt some so much and others not at all.

I drove there and back with my 10 month old who I then spent the day running around. Minor cramps was all and I'm not strong and brave by any means!

papayasareyum · 08/02/2018 13:47

can I strongly recommend you get it done at a family planning clinic or hospital where they can give you a numbing injection prior to insertion? I’ve had two: one at the doctors and one at the family planning clinic. The one at the doctors without pain relief hurt like hell. The one at the clinic with pain relief injection was absolutely fine and no worse than a smear!

Fianceechickie · 08/02/2018 17:33

@papayasareyum do you mind me asking how much it was at the clinic where you had the anaesthetic injection? That does sound quite appealing...

@Fianceechickie
How did it go today? Coil all fitted?

papayasareyum · 08/02/2018 18:06

@Fianceechickie. It didn’t cost anything. It was a local family planning clinic. I mentioned it in my consultation so they knew I wanted it (pain relief) It was pain free (unlike my first coil fitting with no pain relief which was awful)

Fianceechickie · 08/02/2018 22:47

No @jkl0311 the doctor rang to cancel! Got another app for first march! V annoying cos now I'll be worrying again!

@Fianceechickie that's annoying as you sort of build yourself up for those appointments!

Fintress · 09/02/2018 07:29

That is so annoying when you have had the build up and worrying yourself sick. I chose not to have the Mirena as I suffer migraines but having the copper IUD fitted, changed a few years later and refitted was a breeze for me. Only issue I had was when I had a smear one time and they couldn't find the threads. I had to go for a scan to see it was still in place, it was. They decided to remove it under GA. I don't need contraception now thankfully.
