To ask what to wear for an interview?

Have in interview coming up next week. It’s for an internal promotion. Currently work in an office however it’s very casual. People who work at my level for example could go into work wearing a tracksuit and that’s fine. So I have NO proper ofificey type outfits. I usually just wear skinny’s and a jumper.

Haven’t been for an interview in about 10 years!

What do I wear? Budget is a bit of a problem also, I reckon I could probably spare maybe at a push £40? So obviously not enough for a trouser suit etc? Confused

Could you get a smart casual blazer to wear with dark smart skinny jeans and a nice top?

WalkingUpTheMountain · 06/02/2018 22:57

£40 is more than enough! I would get a pencil skirt (around £10 from New Look or Primark), a smart blouse (Primark are good) and and a blazer-type jacket. I would wear some low heels too, but smart flats would also be fine.

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 06/02/2018 22:58

Do you have a nice plain coloured dress? You don't need to wear a suit.

ilovebutterflies · 06/02/2018 22:59

Would black skinnies be ok? I have a nice pair and could prob find a top, then have enough to buy a nice blazer, I was worrying that jeans would be a no no for an interview. Although I suppose unless they touched my leg they would know they aren’t just tight trousers Blush

For £40 I’d go for a pair of the plain black Sainsbury’s jeggings (really versatile/flattering shape for all I’ve found & a very solid black do can look smartish). Then buy a brand new thin knit jumper from H&M with nice jewellery & boots - preferably black ankle if you have them. Literally no idea what age/shape/size you are so might be way off base - but as a universal budget versatile outfit that would be my go to! Good luck!

Something like this would be well within budget. Just do what you need to do to feel a bit smarter/more confident, but still you. For me that would be jacket+polished shoes+blow dry.

Black skinnies would be fine.

HoHoHoHo · 06/02/2018 23:01

I wouldn't wear jeans. I got some interview stuff from everything5pounds.com when I was skint. It's a bit hit and miss but you can pick up some ok stuff there, like a plain black dress and jacket.

ilovebutterflies · 06/02/2018 23:03

Thanks walking , will have a mooch around primark tomorrow, would have to wear black tights with a pencil skirt I’ve crap rashy legs 😂

Shakeshake, no I don’t have any dresses that I could wear that would be smart enough unfortunately

No problem, Primark are great for affordable workwear. Black tights would be fine, I would wear them too! I would avoid jeans.

ilovebutterflies · 06/02/2018 23:12

Ducking I have a wee pair of black block heel ankle boots if I wear skinny trousers or block courts for trousers or a skirt, so hopefully I be ok for shoes. I’m shitting myself about this interview but I think if I feel good about myself it will help

Hohoho, would be afraid by the time it was delivered and I might not like it, so hopefully will find something in the shops.

A black blazer is really good imo for turning a "casual" outfit into a "smart casual" one. Can also be worn on other days over jeans etc without looking weird.
Good luck!

Gide · 06/02/2018 23:17

Black skinnies, blazer, shirt. Boom!

I went to interview a couple of weeks ago. I went in trousers, jacket, smart stuff. Other two pitched up in casual shoes, casual clothes. I have never seen such casual clothes on interviewees!

ilovebutterflies · 06/02/2018 23:26

Gide see this is my worry, I want to be smart but afraid to be too much , as even if I got the job I wouldn’t be wearing really smart clothes. It’s confusing

OP posts:
squishysquirmy · 06/02/2018 23:30

I would err on the side of being too smart rather than not smart enough, if it was me.
It may well be that they think "she didn't need to dress up so much" but I can't see how that could count against you? It would show them that you really wanted the promotion.

I think it is normal to wear smarter clothes to an interview than you would wear to the job itself. You definitely don't want to be more casually dressed than the interviewer.

mumpoints · 06/02/2018 23:31

Shows you've made an effort if you dress up. Blazer is perfect.

Any one you can borrow something from?

ilovebutterflies · 06/02/2018 23:33

Squishy that’s a really good point. it’s just been so long since I’ve been for one I really haven’t a clue!!

OP posts:
ilovebutterflies · 06/02/2018 23:34

Mumpoints no, I have 2 friends but we are completely diff sizes

Skinnies doesn't have an apostrophe unless they belong to someone called skinny.

JustKeepStumbling · 07/02/2018 01:15

Why not try a charity shop for a cheap blazer?
