Please please help - head lice. Worst infestation I've ever seen

I am horrified and disgusted. My poor dd

We had visitors just before Xmas and we used headrin two weeks - sorted. Or so we thought.

Just done DD'S hair with here in once as she was itchy and I've never seen anything like it Blush

I have been combing them out of DD'S hair since 7pm and it's horrific. Like millions of them I am mortified. Like a black film of nits and it's never ending.

I need to know what to use or should I take her to the Dr? I feel we need something stronger but what??

Thankyou everyone. Dd is 12 and we managed to get her to this age before they reared their ugly heads. I am honestly mortified.

I have the nitty gritty comb and will do my hair later.

Will keep combing through

I feel so bad for poor dd

There is no point in going to the GP. They don't have any miracle cures. Just treat and comb and comb and comb. For twice as long as you think is necessary. And then comb some more. If she is as bad as you say she has probably spread it round at school so is likely to be reinfested herself so settle in for the long haul on this one.

Hedrin 4% spray feels m over the counter at the chemist is really good but you have to keep combing. Dd hasn’t had them since high school but now ds has started with them Angry

Cut her hair to a bob if they are long and then rince out everyday with vinegar, alcohol vinegar if possible. Don't rince out the vinegar as it repells the nits,, the vinegar odor goes away when the hair have dried (there is a very faint smell left but you would have to be very close to smell it).

Why do so many kids in the UK have head lice?

I ride on a bus full of what I now believe to be lice magnets multiple times a week and my job is too far away to walk to. 😣

@LEMtheoriginal you need to buy Lyclear, the expensive one that kills the eggs and lice. Honestly it's the bomb Grin

Then repeat it a week later and they will be gone

OMG!!

I can not stop scratching.

DD and I suffer from frequent bouts of psychological nits....

You need to make sure its the one that kills the eggs too though!

@LEMtheoriginal go to communityhygieneconcern and order the Bug Busting kit - chemical free way and definitely works

DD's infant school used to put signs up in the classroom windows to let parents know when there was a case of lice, you could see us all scratching!

DD got them once and Hedrin once worked for us - very gloopy but it doesn't need to stay on for very long and then you wash it out.

If you have long hair yourself, make sure it's tied back when your combing your child's hair (voice of bitter experience here too).

Tea tree oil in her hair and in her conditioner will keep them off

If she's infected others she'll get them back

Products containing dimeticone are the most effective - works physically rather than chemically by coating and suffocating eggs and lice.

Just keep using the comb, it;s spiral bits grab even tiny bits of eggs and pull them out...

We used to sit with wet hair and run out fingers through you could see the chads on the head, as the big ones hide near the warmth...

Many a time sat nit popping with the kids, as some idiot didn't check their kids

Mine had fine curly hair and the NittyGritty comb pulled and made them cry, so I used a Napp comb - still fine metal prongs, but short and smooth, not kinked like the NittyGritty. Can't believe people are really suggesting wrapping a child's head in cling film Confused

The thing that worked best for DS was vinegar. Nothing else worked.

I have never used chemicals. Seen enough lice to last a lifetime, so check the childrens' hair weekly.
It takes conditioner, combing (Nitty Gritty),and time. My rule is to comb through the whole head twice after I have found nothing.
I had a neighbour who would send her DCs to my house, then tell me that they had nits when I took them home. Angry
She said they were 'impossible to get rid of'. They were constantly infecting my DCs, so I had enough.
I eventually decided to put them through the ordeal too. They were happy to sit and watch TV while I tackled the buggers.
Neighbour was amazed that they were totally free of the little fuckers. She had only ever done chemicals, followed by a rinse. Not terribly effective.

And be sure to text all of your DCs parents to ask them to check. Otherwise they keep coming back!
Don't be ashamed. It's normal, but needs responsibility to stop the cycle.

I use a mix of olive oil and vinegar.

Cheapo olive oil to kill the adults and cheapo vinegar to dislodge the eggs. Mix them together and apply liberally with child’s head leaning back and a towel to stop it running into the eyes. Wrap in a towel or cling film, 30minutes later comb through with a Nitty Gritty. repeat after 7 days, but keep combing through and repeat the vinegar more frequently if you find more eggs.

Nothing works, they were the bain of my life for years. 6 kids and a few friends who were permanently infected

Tried all the lotions and potions and tea tree oil. None work properly.

For gods sake don't do the oil stuff, it's a nightmare getting it out, if you do try it have a bottle of fairy liquid ready to cut through the grease. And please please don't leave clingfilm round a childs head at night!

Nitty gritty and buckets of cheap shit conditioner over and over and over again.

A huge bottle of cheap and cheerful conditioner and a flea comb (way better than a nitty gritty comb)

MayFayner · 05/02/2018 21:02

Hedrin isn't a pesticide. It's a only a "chemical" in the same way that Vaseline is. It's just a very heavy silicone that smothers the lice by blocking up their airways.

Nit comb every day to catch the new hatchlings.
Change bedding too in case they’re hiding out.
I also had an electric comb for dry hair.
I used hedrin first and then nit comes constantly (for the infant years)

There has been a constant lice epidemic in dD's school this year, many letters home! Apparently many lice are now resistant to the chemicals available so they simply don't clear the infestation. I think you just have to comb, as others have said. Every night. And all family members should comb too.

Report
Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 05/02/2018 21:04

If DS ever gets nits I am just going to shave his head. He would never tolerate hours of combing and he would be delighted to escape washing his hair for a bit.
