Just think OP, when you've driven from Belfast to Dublin and back your confidence will have improved dramatically and you'll no longer feel nwrpvis. Which is the new official speeling, I've informed the OED snd everything.

bump and tink are right. Hope it all went well.

It wasn't so long ago in ROI that you could drive without a licence whilst learning and then drive yourself to the test, potentially fail it and then drive home. Only proviso though you weren't allowed on the motorway.

The bulk of the drive is straight forward. The hardest part is the city and roundabouts driving. Just remember take your time. If you miss the exit on the roundabout in most cases just go around again.

Ireland's very easy to drive in, you'll be fine.
If you go through the M50 toll you can pay for it on line in advance.
Only thing is you mentioned frequent stops. There are only 2 motorway service stations in Ireland. You see signs for toilets, refreshments etc. but they are normally just a petrol station in a small town when you turn off for them, not proper rest areas.
The traffic is pretty light too ( compared to mainland UK).

If you use google maps on satnav mode it tells you at the top of the screen what lane to be in as you approach junctions and roundabouts. Most modern satnavs do too

I think Advanced driving lessons would benefit you enormously.

Is there a hard and fast rule with roundabouts, ie can you always just stay in the left lane.

I strongly suggest that if you don't know this very basic information after 6 years of driving that you stop driving immediately and get yourself some more lessons.

That is seriously awful. You could kill someone.

I very rarely drive (short distances every few months, don't own my own car) and had to do a 100 mile round trip to a totally unfamiliar area recently. With the aid of Google maps, I survived! You'll be fine.
