AIBU to think Ross from Friends was a terrible human? (lighthearted)

Rewatching now it's on Netflix and i had never previously realised how awful Ross is!

He's so possessive and manipulative while making out he's a nice guy victim all the time.
He's so superior all the time.
And don't even get me started on when he mocks Rachel and Phoebe for taking self defence classes and actually hides and Jumps out at them to prove he's right (hes obviously not right)

I know it's just a tv show but I absoutely loved friends when i was at college and loved Ross and Rachel and it's funny how differently I see some of it now...

oh FFS I hate all this anti Friends shte of late. It's a 90s show. Television and people's attitudes move on*

Yes, me too. It's getting tiresome now.

Anyway, sitcom protagonists aren't supposed to be role models are they? Most of them are extremely flawed individuals (I don't know if it's different in the US as the only US sitcom I've watched is Friends). But look at Basil Fawlty, Victor Meldrew, Hyacinth Bucket, Alan Partridge, The Inbetweeners, Men Behaving Badly etc. They're losers, sexist, selfish, bad tempered, stupid, liars, lazy, snobbish etc. Some of them are complete bastards. But that's what makes them entertaining to watch.

I assumed he wouldn't go to Paris because all their lives, the 'friends' were in New York. As a pp says it can't be because of Ben.

Back when it was first aired I couldn't stand Ross. Now I find him hilarious - tanning booth and teeth whitening are brilliant episodes. His comedic timing is great.
Phoebe still jars slightly for me, but not as much as first time round. It's been my go to on Comedy Central for a couple of years now when I've got 20 minutes free and feel like lighthearted funny viewing.

“ Finding out she was pregnant by him right after she thought she'd finally broken free would have been devastating and explains why she tried her damndest to push him away. It also explains Susan's extreme hostility towards him. They knew he'd hurt Carol and made a reasonable assumption that he wouldn't be the best father.”

This reminds me of the sort of projecting that goes on in relationships section. Because a woman would never use a man for his sperm and then actively try to keep him away from his child while she sets up a happy home with a brand new partner.

Oh friends! I'm utterly and completely in love with chandler. He's like my fictional soul mate and I detest Monica for being so domineering over him.

Ross can be a dick. Like all humans. Although I agree they were on a break sorry rachel Grin

As an adult though I'm seeing phoebe in a new light! For her time she was revolutionary really, multiple partners and mostly casual. And she enjoyed it! No one batted an eye. For the 90s that's pretty not my experience.

But yeah Ross was funny.

ROss is annoying and I could never be friends with him in real life, BUT he has the funniest episodes, doesn’t he?
The spray tan
The leather trousers
The white teeth
The first flashback etc.

StealthPolarBear · 05/02/2018 07:32

I think in the early episodes Rachel has the best one liners
"your fly's still open geller"
Being the only one I can remember right now :)

Aw I'm watching the one where Rachel has a possible broken rib and needs help getting ready. Ross has a tv show to ne on or speech or something but he stays to help Rachel get her ready and then takes her to hospital missing his bog thing. That's nice!
