given that I could just use my phone... it's an expensive i hadn't budgeted into for new car, but it seems silly to have the lovely touch screen but no sat nav installed? Thoughts?

I wish car manufacturers would just build a bog standard Android tablet into the dashboard. It'd do more things than most of their touchscreen implementations, and do them better.

Citroens sat nav is crap too.

Fintress · 03/02/2018 21:24

If it is GPS based then yes, if it's one that needs updates then no.

feeona123 · 03/02/2018 21:26

I would spend it, so much better to have it built in!

PurpleDaisies · 03/02/2018 21:27

I would spend it, so much better to have it built in!

Why though?

ghostyslovesheets · 03/02/2018 21:28

Fords Sat Nav is the dogs bollox but I am not sure I'd pay that much for it

my phone uses a lot of data if I use it as a sat nav though - and I drive a lot for work

Eminybob · 03/02/2018 21:29

Whaaat? 750? No way, just get a normal Garvin sat nav for a hundred or so quid and you get free updates for life.

TheCraicDealer · 03/02/2018 21:29

My dad has a Jaguar with an inbuilt sat nav and it's been shit from the day he took delivery of it. Think about how often you actually use a sat nav and counter that with how when you need directions you need them to be reliable. You'd be better spending £100 or so on a TomTom with free updates and just keep it in the glovebox for when you need it.

gingerbubs · 03/02/2018 21:31

I paid for sat nav in my new car (Not that much though!) And use google maps on my phone over my car sat as it is so much better. I would suggest don't do it. Get heated seats instead Grin

Piratefairy78 · 03/02/2018 21:33

My inlaws Toyota sat nav is great. They update theirs regularly and it doesn’t cost anything. I also agree that it looks much nicer built in. Not sure if it’s worth £750 though!!!

MrGrumpy01 · 03/02/2018 21:38

Both our cars have built in sat nav, which were both bought used. I find it really useful as I use it everyday at work and so better to be inbuilt. But lots of addresses aren't in now. If I know this i will use a nearby postcode. The one is a ford, it doesn't have our road in despite being built 10 years before the car.

It is useful, but I am not sure if I would pay for it from new.

Namechangetempissue · 03/02/2018 21:38

Hell no. That is an absolute joke of a price (but unsurprising). I guarantee what the unit cost and the price to install is so fractional the £750 is insulting (work in the industry). They are usually substandard quality anyway. Save the money and buy a decent one or use your phone. It is just throwing money away. I have so many customers who don't use theirs and use their phones as they are better!

John4703 · 03/02/2018 21:41

I got one in my VW and it is brilliant. It is easy to use, the display also shows right in front of the driver.
Updating is easy, put the card into a pc and let it update off the VW website.

Dontsweathesmallstuff · 03/02/2018 21:45

We have a built in sat nav in a renault. Its good and updates are free. But we didnt pay anywhere near £750 for it.

IloveJudgeJudy · 03/02/2018 22:17

I wouldn't, either. We use google maps instead.

A bit off-thread, sorry, but PP who use Waze, don't you find it uses loads of battery and makes your phone super hot?

RitaMills · 03/02/2018 22:30

I’ve just bought a new Toyota and got the built in sat nav. I’ve just upgraded from a Yaris which had the touch screen but no sat nav, I prefer it on my car screen rather than having to use my phone so to me at the moment it’s worth it, but maybe that’s just because it’s still a bit of a novelty as I only got my new car on Tuesday.

MexicanBob · 03/02/2018 22:39

No I wouldn't. Google maps is way better than any satnav I've ever used.

trixymalixy · 03/02/2018 22:41

Total waste of money. They're never as good as google maps on your phone.

SpiritInTheNight · 03/02/2018 22:45

I wouldn’t bother, we bought a RAV4 in November and the salesman admitted the sat nav isn’t as good/ updated as regularly as google maps

ThePinkOcelot · 03/02/2018 22:46

No way would I pay £750 for that!

lampygirl · 03/02/2018 22:48

If you rely on satnav then probably don’t get it built in. Both BMW and Merc sat navs I’ve had haven’t been as good as google maps. However, I always get it built in as I only use it once in a blue moon for navigating but use it a lot for arrival times to common destinations so actual directions largely irrelevant, and I CBA with the faff of the power cable for an external device, removing it when you go in services/park at the other end, and the ones you do get do a good enough job of finding me a random street in a town miles away or in a foreign country, by which point I can usually navigate by eye anyway.

lampygirl · 03/02/2018 22:49

Also people who stick their massiv phablet phones in the middle of their windscreens to run google maps so they presumably can’t see much of the road ahead are an absolute pet hate of mine

Honeybooboo123 · 03/02/2018 22:55

Ah i am so confused now!!!!

You can buy the sd card for the sat nav on ebay for around 25pound. DH bought a mazda and the sat nav card was around 350 but got it on ebay and it works perfectly.

Ginpasta · 03/02/2018 23:31

My car has car play so I can connect my phone to it and google maps comes up on my touch screen - it's fab & much better than my previous sat navs

WTFIsThisVirus · 03/02/2018 23:31

DPs car has a built in sat nav but it's outdated and the UI is horrible! We just stick to Google maps
