A friend of mine is a really hardworking teacher, also the parent of two high needs children. She works really hard but has surprised with with this comment I saw from them.

She are going to be teaching a book to their class soon is watching the film of the book, when asked why not read the book they posted this comment -

Sorry X, I don't really have time to read. I work till midnight doing school work Monday - Thursday and later on Saturday and Sunday. I suppose it could be my Friday night read 😊 Come to think of it, I tried when I was 15 and didn't get very far.

AIBU to think of you are teaching a book (even in primary school) you need to read it your self?

Mostly I feel it’s sad that as a teacher she doesn’t have the time built into her working week to do some basic prep for her lessons, and this is a reflection of how difficult teaching has become and shows why so many are leaving.

If it’s a play, for primary aged children. I think watching it is fine. I couldn’t imagine wanting to read something I’m not that interested in, after a full days warm (and then some) and two extra needs children. I have one extra needs child and so not work as doesn’t my partner and I still struggle. That’s depression though probably.

Battleax a primary school teacher teaching Michael Morpurgo could read it to the class without having read it before, yes.

Battleax · 03/02/2018 20:15

They don't, though in my experience. Every primary teacher I've ever shared living space with preps thoroughly even if it means pressganging other people. Those who didn't want the breadth of primary teaching, did something else. There have got to be better corners to cut than not reading texts. Even finding a proper 70s BBC black-backdrop performance of Shakespeare is going to be less likely to be abridged, if she's really pushed.

Pengggwyn

No competent teacher would try to teach Shakespeare without having read the play, so I think the competency of this teacher has already been established.

The use of Romeo and Juliet was merely a hypothetical example, but I do accept that it enabled you to neatly avoid answerng the actual point.

Please could Helena come back and tell me how to work smarter?
Lethaldrizzle- after spending two-three hours marking 30-50 exercise books, I do not have the capacity to find twenty minutes to read. I just about manage to keep eyes open long enough to brush my teeth.

StickThatInYourPipe · 04/02/2018 09:57

I'm always a bit sceptical when people say they don't have time to read. 20 mins a day is all it takes

I have to make time for reading, I don’t think I have ever read for only 20 minutes! Once I start I won’t put the book down! I may aim for 20 minutes but when I check the clock after dragging myself away, it has normally been a few hours

Penggwn To be fair, I was lying: I adore Chaucer
So how do we know how much of what you say is true?

5cats · 04/02/2018 11:07

I'm probably way off mark here, but i read the teachers response as pure sarcasm Blush

Evelynismycatsformerspyname · 04/02/2018 12:58

That's a bit of a moot point on an anonymous internet discussion forum isn't it naked - how do we know you're really snaked scientist - you could be a fully clothed housewife for all anyone reading knows, no matter what you (or any one of us) writes :o

I don't love every text I teach... I'm not just a teacher, I'm a human being with opinions and likes and dislikes of my own.

I use my professionalism when I teach, not my personal opinion. Good job too because some of the stuff we're expected to teach, and, according to some on this thread, allegedly supposed to love is dire. Warhorse is incredibly poor, for example.
