should I go to the gp?

I think I slipped a disc in my back on New Year's Eve! I had this intense pain all down my right leg and it felt like it was burning!

Ever since little things set my back off and I'm in such pain for up to a week, it's just getting me down! I'm only 26 and usually very active, but I just can't do normal things all the time.

Last night dp and I were playing around and he pulled me and now my back is hurting again today. I can't bend down to the floor, I can't swim with ds like I usually would, I'm struggling to carry his kit to Tae Kwon Do and I'm miserable.

My only question is will the gp do anything or is this it for life? Will I be unreasonable to go or will it waste his time?

Yes, go. I'm always a bit worried about being a timewaster at the doctor but if you can't do your normal activities, you need looking at.
Call 111 to get a GP out of hours appointment.

taekwondo · 03/02/2018 09:13

@Fishcalledlola Ok thank you! I will do this! I'm just so down! It literally just got better and I could move again and now it's hurting again! I just hope they can do something

Yes consult GP.
Yes see pharmacist in meantime for advice and otc meds.
No don't playfight when you're carrying an untreated injury.

No idea if lifelong or not sorry.

Book a routine appointment with your GP who will probably refer you for physiotherapy.
Or if you can afford it go straight to a physio.
Have a look at 'red flag' signs for back pain, if you have none of those you would be unreasonable to seek an out of hours GP appt really.

taekwondo · 03/02/2018 09:26

Looked at red flag, ok no massive terrible signs but am stopped doing daily activities so I'll book a normal gp appointment, thank you all

I'd try a chiropractor personally, the Dr won't have many options but for painkillers

tarheelbaby · 03/02/2018 09:53

Do go to the GP for a referral to a specialist and some physio. Insist on an MRI; pay for one privately if possible. It may be nothing serious but it's better to find out what's going on now rather than leaving it too long.

My husband recently went through all this. His physio actually told him that 'no one would do an MRI for this'. When he finally had an MRI, it revealed more than just a slipped disc but by then he had done extensive damage to his back and is now in a very bad way. Having the MRI sooner would have made a huge difference.

tarheelbaby could you please provide some references about the risk v harm in mri for back pain in the OPs situation that supports that she should 'insist' on an mri?

CantChoose · 03/02/2018 10:24

Here is a good patient-friendly and rational article about MRI OP. It may be that an mri will be indicated for you - it's impossible to know without a proper history and examination. But insisting on one is unlikely to get you very far. I hope you feel much better soon! blogs.bmj.com/bjsm/2015/08/12/should-i-have-an-mri-right-now-explaining-the-role-of-mri-in-new-low-back-pain/

Hi op Im unsure wether it is a slipped disc but I would before go to gps , i had a slipped disc and couldn’t get up off the floor, the doctor had to come out and give me a morphine injection in my bum I couldn’t even put my underwear on. I was in tears it was worse than labour. I was bed bound for 2 weeks and on tramadol and diazepam. I couldn’t move i felt like I was paralysed.

taekwondo · 03/02/2018 11:30

Hi all, not sure if it is a slipped disc, but it's the only thing that matched the symptoms I was showing! The burning feeling down the leg, I literally froze with the pain and almost vomited, had to drop what I was holding and then led down,

It may be a trapped nerve, hence the burning pain down your leg. I have had both a trapped nerve and a slipped disc (not at the same time) and the only thing that cured it was the Chiropractor.

spagbol11 · 03/02/2018 11:46

Have you researched sciatica? That causes shooting pains from the back and down the legs x
