Citalopram and PMS

Sorry not an AIBU but posting for traffic.

Like a lot of us, I suffer horrendously with PMS. I am a hormonal, crying, scatty and downright spiteful nightmare for three days before AF. Plus - feed me ALL the salt, sugar and carbohydrates, thanks...Confused

Because of an underlying gynae condition, my cycle is best described as “erratic”. I’m not on birth control and my cycle is between 23 days - 42 days. I also suffer from debilitating dysmenorrhea. So much so that I save annual leave to take as I need it (Work are NOT sympathetic toward this despite having background knowledge of underlying condition with Dr’s note).

One way I can tell I’m coming up to AF is that 7 days before I have the sorest boobs ever. I mean seriously, just brushing past makes me wince.

To get to the point - I had been off citalopram for a few months, but four weeks ago went back on. I’ve felt bril. I’m on 20mg dose.

This morning, my period just came on, no warning headache, rattiness, cravings and boobs non sore. (My last period started 19th December so I knew it was imminent but no soreness).

Obviously I understand it taking away the rattiness and the crying fits. But to take away the physical symptoms seems strange?

Google hasn’t helped, so I thought I’d ask if anyone had experience of this also?

I’m definitely NOT complaining btw!

Sorry it was so long Grin

Not exactly the same but connected maybe. When I was on Citalopram (40mg then 20mg) my periods were twice as heavy, so it does seem possible that it could have physical effects on your PMS too.
