No real incentive to weight watch

Years ago I'd go out to restaurants and bars and would want to look nice now - I go nowhere now except work. No time for hobbies. No nice places to go where I live now. No point in buying clothes to go out in - would go to waste. Just no point. Get in and too tired to make food. Only comfort I get is from sweet foods.

With you there. Health should be a fantastic reason but I'm still finding it hard to break bad habits. Angry

grobagsforever · 02/02/2018 21:21

Why not go out?

thenightsky · 02/02/2018 21:22

I went through a stage like that when we moved to a rural location and I had two small DC. Full time work too. Too skint to go out. The only saving grace was the fact that living rurally meant no opportunity to go out and buy chocolate etc. I found I took pleasure in looking good for work really.

Aquamarine1029 · 02/02/2018 21:24

You are on one hell of a slippery slope. By the time you realize how precious a healthy body is, I fear it may be too late.

Bluntness100 · 02/02/2018 21:24

I don't believe there is no nice places to go where you live or near where you live.

I think if you lost weight, got some nice clothes, and felt better about yourself, you'd maybe want to go out and find those places.

So you're in a vicious circle. Feeling crap makes uou not want to do things. So you sit and eat crap, which makes uou feel worse. You need to break the cycle.

The incentive is, is this what you want your life to look like in a year, in five, in ten? How fat and lonely will you be then?

mrbob · 02/02/2018 21:32

I totally understand what you are saying. But sometimes the mood follows the action. So if you can practice self care- healthy food, some exercise, looking after yourself then you may find you want to do some of these things again. And even if you don't your mood will be heaps better so you might not care and will find other things that bring you joy

I never used to believe this and thought it was all bollocks until I hit rock bottom and found that actually the only thing that kept me alive was feeding myself something vaguely healthy 3 times a day, reading and walking around the block

I was where you were and found heaps of books and podcasting helped hugely. Still fat but MUCH healthier and happy and have just come back from a 5k run :) It is all possible I promise
PM if you want any suggestions :)

Thanks all. I'm at a healthy weight but just feel rubbish about myself. Work full time and get home late. I look a mess. I see women about with their nails hair and Botox done - all gym toned and I think I have no time for any of that (even if I wanted to). What is the point in having an okish job and training years for it when result is I've no time for self care don't drive a fancy car or fancy house and have crap clothes. Im just perplexed how it got to this

I understand completely. I only go to work where I wear a uniform, food shopping and to walk the dogs but.....my blood pressure was high nd that scared me so I lost 50lbs. Now I feel fit, strong and bp and cholesterol are normal. I just long for staff meetings and training days so I can dress up whilst pretending I've made no effort at all and always look like that outside work!

FollowYourOwnNorthStar · 02/02/2018 21:48

I agree with mrbob.

I know you have no time, but start with something small, like:

  • pick up the phone and make a nail appointment for your lunch break next week; or
  • set aside a lunch break next week to go shopping for a nice, new work top
  • buy a new lipstick. Whether you wear makeup or not, it’s either a change from your usual, or a start to making you look brighter.

The good feelings that come from these smaller things will propel you further, and maybe the following week you can get out for a walk, book a new haircut (or style session) or another new top.

All small things, but they add up. It’s definitely a cycle - if you look good, you feel good, and if you feel good, you look good! But also - if you look bad, you feel bad etc. Give yourself a small boost out of this, and I reckon the world will seem like it has more possibilities for you.

BrownTurkey · 02/02/2018 21:49

I can never be bothered to eat well or exercise just to lose weight, but I do FEEL much better when I do. That's the only reason for me. And personal image does affect my job prospects too. I hope you're ok OP.

Bluntness100 · 02/02/2018 21:52

But you must have some time off op, very few people work seven days a week. Why don't you have time then?

fia101 · 02/02/2018 21:53

Thanks again everyone for the tips - start small and try to get my a mojo back
