Endless homework printing

I have just helped DS, year 11, print off next week’s homework. It took 45 mins and I have just counted the pages - there are 180 in total! AIBU to think this is ridiculous, terrible for the environment and costing me a fortune in ink. Clearly it’s a way of school’s saving £ but I think it makes the teachers put things on paper without thinking it through. One 24 page handout was in a huge font and, if in smaller size, would have gone on 1/4 of the pages. Does anyone else have this? Rant over.

Why didn’t you change the font before printing? I would email the teacher. I would also make my child print at school on the industrial printer

Heratnumber7 · 02/02/2018 20:27

Why do you need to print it?

Celeriacacaca · 02/02/2018 20:27

It’s pdf so I can’t alter the handouts. Students have no access to printer at school for homework (I can see why!). Not one teacher, but all of them.

Many are past papers and text book extracts which they have to complete, on the paper and hand in.

Does it all need to be printed? 180 pages is a lot for a week of work. With that amount I would have guessed some of it is study notes or comprehensions.

RavenWings · 02/02/2018 20:31

Ah ok. Honestly that is ridiculous. There is a lot to be said for buying a textbook and past paper books as we do in Ireland!

I wouldn't email the teacher as it's a policy being set by management imo so may be out of their hands. I would talk to the principal about the amount of paper being used in general, not specificing one class.

SweetMoon · 02/02/2018 20:32

This used to do my head in at dds old school. Everything was emailed over and so had to all be printed off for her to be able to do it. We never had 180 pages in one go though! That's shocking!

Notevilstepmother · 02/02/2018 20:33

If it’s a PDF then the teacher may not have been able to change it either.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 02/02/2018 20:33

I've moaned about a similar thing with our school but it's never been 180 pages worth. Definitely worth emailing the head of year or something! That's beyond ridiculous.

GeneHuntsMistress · 02/02/2018 20:36

What happens if a parent doesn’t own a printer though?

I would suggest emailing head to ask for homework to be available online in a word document, so homework can be typed and emailed back to teachers when completed.
Everyone saves money then and better for the environment.

gobbin · 02/02/2018 20:38

pdf to doc converter online is a winderful tool.

Tinkerbec · 02/02/2018 20:38

I can’t imagine asking any of my kids to print their isn work. It’s bad enough getting them to do it as it is.

I don’t think you are being unreasonable.

Celeriacacaca · 02/02/2018 20:39

Yes, head of Year good idea athing. The teachers are under a lot of pressure to prepare the students but this is madness. There was another 12 page Eng lit quote task which wouldn’t print as it hasn’t been uploaded to the site properly, so that wasn’t included.

OP posts:
Rinoachicken · 02/02/2018 20:40

I’d be invoicing the school for the cost of paper and ink cartridges! That’s ridiculous!

EggsonHeads · 02/02/2018 20:40

At the age I would had that much printing in a year at the very least. Certainly no more that 6 pages a week absolute maximum if handing in a couple of assignments/assignments with graphs. Any bulk printing was done by the school though. My school was the top scoring school in our education system for years on end so it clearly isn't necessary to do a ridiculous amount of printing. How bizarre.

TotallyWingingIt · 02/02/2018 20:42

If it's PDF can your DC not fill it in on the computer/laptop then email it back to the teacher? This is what my son does all the time when we're out of paper or ink Smile

ReanimatedSGB · 02/02/2018 20:55

I don't have a working printer at the moment. To print 180 pages would cost me about £20 at the internet cafe, which I do not have. I'd be refusing to do it and complaining to the school.

Olivo · 02/02/2018 20:58

Email the teachers themselves rather than the head of year! I agree this is not acceptable. The. Head of year will only have to pass on to the teachers concerned,so go direct!

TeenTimesTwo · 02/02/2018 21:00

Our printer lets you print 2 pages to 1 sheet, so each comes out A5 size.
I agree however that quite possibly it didn't all need to be printed.

View it as an investment in your DS's GCSE results.

winglesspegasus · 02/02/2018 21:01

this is pretty much a non issue
pdf to doc converters are all over the net and most are free, also have ones to convert the other way around
teachers should know this or not be allowed to use computers
the world is expensive enough as it is.
use search term"pdf to doc converter" and pick one or check out a few,

Anasnake · 02/02/2018 21:03

Convert PDF to word, change font, job done.

mirime · 02/02/2018 21:04

@TotallyWingingIt not all pdf's are designed to be filled in and not everyone has the knowledge to find a work around.

Anasnake · 02/02/2018 21:05

Why do you have to print at all ? Could it not be completed online or in a word document and emailed back ???
