To ask for more money as job role has changed

Hi!

This might be a bit vague- but I don’t want to say exactly what my job is as it could be outing.

I took a job six months ago doing a manual role. I accepted an hourly rate which was quite low....but I enjoy the work and the hours were very flexible around childcare.
Pretty much as soon as I started they kept asking me to cover other much more technical tasks. I am capable and qualified for these tasks- but wanted the manual role due to childcare and flexibility and I thought less stress.
Now I am almost exclusively performing the technical role.
This would only be mildly annoying but the technicians get paid an hourly rate which is 50% higher than mine.
I feel that are taking advantage of me somewhat as they now have a technical worker being paid a manual workers rate.
Aibu to ask my employer to either reinstate my original duties or to raise my pay? Like I said i’ve Only been there 6 months and I like the work....I don’t want to have to quit, but I feel I would have to if I asked them to change either my pay or role and they said no.
In my contract it did specify “ and other tasks as appropriate to the role” but I am doing none of my originally agreed tasks...and only the technical role.
Surely this can’t be right? Or am I being unreasonable?

Pay up

I think they're treating you unfairly. Let me guess, the technical workers on a higher wage are all males?

Spottyparrot99 · 02/02/2018 20:13

#onlyabigail- no, sadly not. Pretty even mix in both roles. If though was gender discrimination think would have more compelling case!

I'd speak to them but wouldn't get your hopes up! Most companies have employees doing well above their role requirements for no extra pay because they need the job.

You are being completely reasonable. It's been six months, so it's clearly not a temporary thing for a couple of weeks while someone was off - it's established. Treat it as such in the meeting. If you're shy, you should put it in writing instead. Keep it clear and short.

Dear Line Manager,

I am very happy working here with ABC, and really enjoy my work.

I was hired in July at £8 an hour to carry out X job, but since August, I have increasingly been carrying out Y job and since January I have been almost exclusively doing Y job.

This is well within my abilities and qualifications and I enjoy doing it, but the hourly rate for Y job is £12, and I would like to discuss a review of my contract to either reassign me formally to Y job so that I can be paid the standard rate for it, or if this is not possible return me to X job until a formal position at Y job becomes available, in which case I would like to be considered.

Best,

Spotty
