To find thread placemarking with just a full stop really rude?

It's basically telling the OP of any thread that you're treating their life like entertainment but that you can't be arsed in return even to type something like 'That's awful' or 'Hope it works out', which would take about 8 seconds, in return.

Just me?

I don't like it either, but you know what's about to happen, don't you? ...

But yes, depending on the subject really, it can be horrifically rude.

TheSnowFairy · 02/02/2018 18:27

Ooh, that is so tempting...

I agree to a certain extent, especially if it's a sensitive subject but I do come on here for entertainment! Plus, there's so many trolls now that half the time you can't even be sure the thread is real.

Redglitter · 02/02/2018 18:28

I've never understood it same as the posts which just say placemarking. If youve nothing to contribute just add it to your watched threads

Trailedanderror · 02/02/2018 18:29

It is rude. Particularly if it's a sensitive or stressful subject.

Butterymuffin · 02/02/2018 18:31

Ah, I'm not offering entertainment here. Just cathartic rage Wink

AnyFucker · 02/02/2018 18:32

I do it on Netflix or book recommendation threads but not on support threads

HoppyHannah · 02/02/2018 18:35

Why people who are interested in a thread, but may be too busy etc. to respond instantly DO NOT HIT THE "watch this thread" facility, is beyond me.

Am I alone, or maybe people do not know much about this brilliant thing.

Therefore I detest dots and people saying they are placemarking. No one cares love.

VladmirsPoutine · 02/02/2018 18:37

My understanding is that most people do it to see the deletion message following an obviously troll thread.

Iloveanimals · 02/02/2018 18:40

It's no ruder than secretly placemarking is it though? Same people doing the same thing, just one doing it in the open. Still wouldn't do it though 😂

HoppyHannah · 02/02/2018 18:42

I could be wrong, but as long as you are "watching" (clicking the watch this thread button I mean, not dots or placemarking messages to those of us who do not care what you do!, whew....) I think you will see deletion messages.

Is that right?

TheDailyMailLovesTheEUReally · 02/02/2018 18:43

I don't like it. There is one poster in particular who seems to do this all the time. I searched them one day out of idle curiosity and got thread after thread of full stops as their sole contribution - and this included threads about people's divorces, illnesses, bereavements, DV and abuse victims asking for help...

I absolutely 'get' wanting to lurk but not post because you don't feel you have anything useful to add or offer, but FFS use the bookmark facility.

Sparklingbrook · 02/02/2018 18:43

It's more polite to post an actual comment. Sometimes you see 'placemarking to come back later' which could be done using the Watch function.

If I see a . for a placemark I think it means 'I think this thread is going to be deleted and I want to see the deletion message but I CBA to post anything'.

NeepNeepNeep · 02/02/2018 18:43

That's awful OP. Hope it works out.

That's awful.

tabbywabby · 02/02/2018 18:49

YANBU

All 'placemarking' comments, or non-comments, are twattish and make the poster look like a stupid idiot because they can't use the 'watch this thread' link.

I personally find the 'shameless placemarking' or the stupid 'not placemarking' more irritating. At least the dots just signal someone as an idiot without having to read their stupid comment.
