AIBU to think that if you are a beautician and you are poorly with a chest infection and terrible cold -it is common courtesy to cancel your clients. I have just been coughed and spluttered all over whilst having my nails and eyebrows done!!! I know she is self employed and her job is her livlihood but it was awful. I have a good mind to not go back but she is a good beautician.

Ideally yes, but I guess she still needs to eat and pay her bills and it’s horrible to have to work when you feel awful, so I do sympathise with her position.

TitsNnails · 02/02/2018 18:13

They should have called to warn you and given you the option to cancel. She could also have worn a disposable mask, to help prevent spread of germs.

I wouldn't be happy if this had happened to me. How are her hygiene practices in general?

ForgotwhatIcameinherefor · 02/02/2018 18:19

I’m interested to hear the comments as I recently had a cough and cold which dragged on longer than I expected and wondered whether the salon would appreciate me calling to offer them the option to reschedule my appointment. In the end I didn’t as I predicted there would more likely than not be a negative outcome for me Hmm

ForgotwhatIcameinherefor · 02/02/2018 18:20

I meant not good. Or negative.
Not not negative.

Trailedanderror · 02/02/2018 18:21

She should have given you the option of cancelling. I got a horrendous cold from an optician once. I knew I would- he was spluttering and smelt coldy iyswim.

MatildaTheCat · 02/02/2018 18:22

Agree it would have been courteous to have called you to offer the option of rearranging. Wearing a mask might have felt more hygienic but in reality probably offers little protection.

Unfortunately she probably wasn’t in a financial position to lose wages when ill and would have far preferred to be tucked up at home. She also probably caught it from a thoughtless client.

MatildaTheCat · 02/02/2018 18:23

Just remembered I was once prepped for an operation by a nurse whose nose was actually dripping onto the paperwork. That really was rank.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 02/02/2018 18:30

That is rank Matilda it’s also very difficult- one of my neighbours is a HCSW in a privatised walk-in unit contracted to the NHS, so gets vomited on and coughed on regularly at work with predictable consequences. She is still held to account and threatened with sacking when she goes over her sickness quota.

Storminateacup74 · 02/02/2018 18:33

She never wears a hygiene mask but she is very cheap and she is really good at her treatments. Her brother owns the salon and he is the barber who cuts my sons hair and he hates you cancelling at short notice which does happen with kids if they are ill!! I have bought loads of orange juice and vitamins and had a really good shower so hoping will be ok. Just makes me think I want to go elsewhere now and pay a bit more!!!

As a customer, I'd say that's pretty poor service. She should have called to let you know and leave it up to you to decide whether to risk it or not.

I'd start to look elsewhere, plenty of good beauticians around.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 02/02/2018 18:38

YANBU if you are self employed you need to purchase sickness or illness insurance.

I've had this and it's disgraceful - never went back.

EverythingIsAwwwwsome · 02/02/2018 18:40

Yes she should have told you. I spent 25 minutes changing a baby grow after having dd. I was in agony and kept having to rest between moving but was scared to ask the midwife on duty for help as she was coughing and spluttering and I didn't want the baby to get ill. Felt awful for her actually. She should have been in bed.

TitsNnails · 02/02/2018 20:54

I'd be concerned about the rest of her hygiene practices to be honest. Does she sanitise yours and her hands before nail treatments? Tools kept in barbicide?
Does she double dip in the wax pot?

ny20005 · 02/02/2018 20:58

You can't get sickness cover for a cold !!

My dh is self employed & we couldn't afford a sickness policy that was any good as so expensive per month. Most illnesses require an overnight stay in hospital before they'll pay out
