to mourn the fact that there isn't ONE decent chippy near me

There are about 5 chippies within sensible cycling distance of us and they're all appalling :( we always have chips on a Friday night (because I allowed it to become a "thing" when the kids were younger and now they think it's a human right)

I grew up in Stoke on Trent where chippies are amazing...crispy fluffy chips, gravy, beautiful breaded fish, nice mushy peas. We've tried every available chippy here and it's always a soggy, meagre, greasy disappointment Sad

Just wanted to let that out. Before the weekly abomination arrives and I have to shower it in salt and make the best of it.

I've got about four chippies near me. The nearest one is chock-full of bones, the next nearest one is incredibly slow (as in, we waited half an hour last week with barely anyone in the shop), the third one is pretty new and I haven't been yet, and the fourth one is pretty good but with lots of batter.

Nowhere, however, does scraps. I am sad about that. Sad

I've got a fabulous one less than 5 minutes walk away. As soon as you enter they ask "fish?" They cook it fresh. We only buy the chips and we've never had a bad portion in the 4 years the new owners have been there.

I do wish they wouldn't put the jar of pickled eggs on the counter as I have a phobia of eyes and they look like floating eyeballs.

I'm in Manchester and after 20 years have finally found a decent chippy. There's one near us that is ridiculously popular but I have no idea why - greasy chips and bland fish and terrible mushy peas.
The new one I've found also does Greek food including the best halloumi I have tasted. I have to ration going to once a month or I'll be the size of a house

If the fish and chips are horrible, then stop eating that all the time and branch out! Can I suggest Deliveroo or UberEats? App on your phone and anything you like will be at your door within 30 mins - from Turkish to Thai. Not sure they do fish and chips, but maybe they do in some areas?

A planning application has recently been turned down here for a new Chippie in our Chippie free village. It would have been about 30 seconds walk from my flat. The rest of the village seemed to be up in arms at the bare idea. I was distraught it was refused. Sad

Well made fish and chips are food of the gods. Other foodstuffs are great too but there’s nothing wrong with wanting well made fish and chips (in the land of fish and chips!).

fishchips is your good Manchester chippy near a Lidl?

fishchipspeasandgravy · 04/02/2018 13:46

@HandbagKrabby yes it is 😀

FuzzyCustard · 04/02/2018 17:21

g1itterati Deliveroo or Uber Eats???? Laugh myself silly. I don't think you live rurally, do you?

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/02/2018 17:32

I live in a suburb about 4 miles outside one of the country's largest cities and can't get either of those delivery services. Luckily we have a decent chippy within walking distance.
