To think this is a bit cheeky (car repair related).

Last week is was attempting to get my parked car out of a very tight spot at the side of a road and caught the front number plate of the car behind causing it to crack. Fair enough, my issue. Guy was a bit pissed off but these things happen. He wasn’t there when I parked, I had left reasonable space in front of me but he had parked very close behind making it pretty much impossible for me to get out without a lot of small forward and backwards manoeuvres.

Anyhow, I gave him my name and address in good faith, told him to order a replacement and send me the bill. This has now arrived and he’s charged me for replacement front and rear plates and a silly amount for a “garage” to do the replacement work (£60.00 but hasn’t included an invoice from the “garage”) So a bill of around £95.00 in total. Looking on line, plates are around £15.00 and are held on by two screws or sticky tape, so would IBU to send him £15.00.

Tbh if he'd parked up my arse then I wouldn't have offered him anything other than parking advice-certainly wouldn't be handing over a silly amount like he's asking for & definitely not for both plates, he's a cf.

Onesmallstepforaman · 02/02/2018 17:29

Not at all. If you only damaged one, there's no way you should pay more than half of the total cost. Ask to see the invoice and speak to the garage to be certain they did the work. You could phone and ask how much for two number plates and fitting too.

WomanInTheMirrorStaresAtMe · 02/02/2018 17:29

Plates with sticky tape fall off, they are next to useless. Most legitimate places will only do front and back and getting them replaced by a garage is standard.

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/02/2018 17:31

Halfords do them for a fraction of that!

araiwa · 02/02/2018 17:56

he probably took it in to his local dealership

ArsenicNLace · 02/02/2018 18:08

I would insist on getting the details of the garage and say you will pay them direct.

Something similar happened to me. In fact I wasn't even convinced I'd even touched his bumper with mine. There was no visible damage and I even said 'Oh there's no damage' but he was being an arse and said 'not all damage is visible'. Anyway about 2 weeks later he tried to claim it cost £200 pounds to fix. I said 'fine' I will pay the garage direct. After a bit of huffing and puffing and making excuses I never heard from him again. Obviously trying it on!

Number plates cost £6.49 each to a garage. To fit one takes a matter of minutes. There is more time spent verifying the owner's identity which legally has to be done (2 documents required including vehicle log book). £15.00 is on the nail here.
Dispute, he is trying it on.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 02/02/2018 18:14

I would only agree to pay the garage direct upon a full invoice from them.

RaspberryCheese · 02/02/2018 18:17

As above,invoice from garage,pay direct..

GreenTulips · 02/02/2018 18:18

Yep ask for an invoice so you have a record

lampygirl · 02/02/2018 21:16

I paid £18 a plate in Merc main dealers today. He’s having you on unless possibly he drives a Bentley...
