is this witchcraft?

Dh made me a cuppa. I had just come into the house and he poured the water into my mug.

I couldn’t see the water at that point, but I could hear it being poured, and I said to DH “did you boil that?” because it didn’t sound hot.

DH checked and it turned out he hadn’t boiled the kettle, but is concerned that a few hundred years ago I would be burned at the stake for being a witch: he argues that it is impossible to determine the temperature of water by the noise it makes when poured.

Who’s right? I think very hot water sounds more tinkly and cold water sounds splashy. Am I hallucinating this? Am I a witch? Or is it a thing?

I can hear the difference if someone is running the hot or cold tap. And I can smell the heating before I feel it. I thought everyone could.

Gibble1 · 03/02/2018 00:45

I can hear the difference between hot and cold. Can also smell the heating before I feel it but I do suffer with my hearing.

Doctordid · 03/02/2018 00:49

Cold and hot definitely sound different. Never thought about that before.

safariboot · 03/02/2018 02:07

Tom Scott's Youtube channel has a video about it.

It's because hot water is runnier than cold water. Same as hot honey is runnier than cold honey, but since cold water is already really runny you can't notice by watching, but it changes the sound.

InsomniacAnonymous · 03/02/2018 02:14

"It's because hot water is runnier than cold water."

Grin For some reason that's made me giggle.

Clandestino · 03/02/2018 02:30

I can hear the difference too. Also spot when it got too cold. Same for water taps, hot and cold water sound different. Milk sounds different from when DH has a glass of whiskey or a beer.

kungpopanda · 03/02/2018 02:46

Of course it sounds different. One can hear the tea screaming - faintly - over the triumphant bubble of the kettle

sashh · 03/02/2018 05:49

Yes hot and cold water sound different.

MyOwnFingernails · 03/02/2018 11:34

Could tell when boiled potatoes were cooked through by the sound of the bubbling water.

BoreOfWhabylon · 03/02/2018 11:38

Tangential, but I can smell which cups of tea/coffee have sugar in them and which don't. I thought everyone could do this until I mentioned it once. Apparently not

Zaphodsotherhead · 03/02/2018 11:42

I can always tell when my shower starts running hot from the change in noise. Definte difference.

TitaniasCloset · 03/02/2018 12:09

I can smell sugar in tea. Not always, but usually.

TitaniasCloset · 03/02/2018 12:10

Oh Bore posted that already.

LynetteScavo · 03/02/2018 12:41

I'm convinced things sound different in the dark, but apparently that is totally impossible.

Biffsboys · 03/02/2018 14:27

I’m off to boil the kettle Grin

RedCarsGoFaster · 03/02/2018 14:33

Yay, fellow witches!

I can smell the difference between cheap vodka, medium quality and the good stuff. No tasting required.

I can also hear electronic devices on standby, despite being 37 and supposed to grow out of that as a teenager!

DontCallMeCharlotte · 03/02/2018 14:35

The Archers use a real boiling kettle in the studio for coffee/tea-making scenes because hot water sounds different being poured.

(Also I would say coffee is wetter than tea)

meredintofpandiculation · 03/02/2018 14:41

I can't tell when the cold water coming from the shower head has turned into hot water unless I reach cautiously in with one finger to test it.

Annwithnoe · 04/02/2018 18:02

My dad’s aunt could hear when a fruit cake was cooked (she said it stopped singing) and when potatoes were boiled. She was bedridden before she died and would shout instructions from the bed. She thought her family were a bit “simple” not to be able to hear these things for themselves.

UrsulaPandress · 04/02/2018 19:30

Oh now that is impressive.

Clandestino · 05/02/2018 19:26

Fuck yeah. Our neighbour once left some electric yoke turned on in his shed. DH and DD were all good and I almost went mad. It was the most horrendous noise ever. And I can hear the devices on standby, funny enough it actually got worse now as I am older and my fibromyalgia got worse.

JontyDoggle37 · 05/02/2018 19:31

I can smell when it’s going to snow....

moofolk · 05/02/2018 19:34

Yes there's a difference and also yes you'd probably be denounced as a witch. 🙂

LondonHerbivore32 · 05/02/2018 19:56

There’s definitely a difference in how hot water sounds when it’s being poured!

Also, I can ‘hear’ when my slow cooker is ready and can smell sugar in tea/coffee. Clearly my other car is a broom......
