To ask for your tips on moving houses

As I know situations can be different for each family...

But it's the first time I'm moving houses (from rental to rental, both private) and every time I think about it, my mind goes blank, I don't know how to start organising myself. DH is the "let's just put everything in boxes and go" kind. However I'm slightly OCD and can't move without knowing that I've taken care of all the small details.
So please help me think of things that I might forget -I'm BU feeling this anxious I know but I need to feel that I've got things under control.

I know we have to think about moving broadband and TV subscriptions, as well as water, gas etc. And we need to pack. Anything else that needs to be organised before we move? I'm freaking out thinking that I might miss something!

If you pack for yourself, label at least 2 sides of the box and the top. Preferably all 4 sides. Makes it easier to identify them when stacked. I typed mine up and had a master list, but I realise this won't be everyone's idea of fun. Get movers though.

I did some batch cooking before we moved (into foil containers) and froze them, then took a cool bag in the car. Straight into freezer in new home. Yes to takeaway the first night, but I knew I wouldn't want to cook after unpacking for the next few days. Chuck in a frozen cake or cookies if you want to feel super smug.

Bishops Move are a UK wide removal firm. They moved us from Droitwich to Peterborough. They will probably move us again to a neighbouring street.

We would damage ourselves and our property if we tried to move our stuff ourselves.

Get a skip!

Put toilet roll, washing up liquid, light bulbs and mobile phone charger in the essentials box with the kettle.
Pack an overnight bag so you have everything you need overnight in one place.
Ship out children and pets to friends or family for the day.
Use supermarket bags-for-life for books.
Arrange a supermarket delivery to the new address for the next day.

Wine and beer in the fridge when you arrive. You can toast your new home when you finally get to collapse :)

Batch cooking is a great idea! At least I'll have something ready for hungry teens for the next day Grin... Also, arranging tesco delivery for the next day. Will leave fridge on one day before and fill it with wine

I typed mine up and had a master list, but I realise this won't be everyone's idea of fun
Oh it is my idea of fun too!

Really brilliant ideas all, thank you so much!!

We moved recently and put different coloured stickers on the boxes which corresponded to the room they were to go in. Then, in the day, put posters on the doors with the right colour. Made it dead easy.

FlouncyDoves · 04/02/2018 15:25

Oh, and the obvious box of kettle, tea, coffee, torch bog roll etc

DandelionAndBedrock · 04/02/2018 16:14

In which case, OP, you want an Excel spreadsheet. Every item (to the extent you can be bothered) on the list with a column for box number, and a column for destination at the other end.

Sort them and group by box number and print out, then stick on each side of the box. Sort and group by room and stick the list up in new house so everyone knows where they are going. Then delete the spreadsheet and pay the nice people with a van to do it for you Grin.

I'm a regular mover and what works for me is:

Use a removal firm - this x 100. It's the best value for money item in any house move.
Label boxes, get them into the rooms that the packed items will belong in. Unpack as soon as possible otherwise you will be living out of boxes for months.
Keep clothes in drawers and hangers on wardrobe items - this cuts down massively on work and general faffing.
Pack an overnight bag - toothbrush, toothpaste, shower gel, any important medication.
Kettle and tea per almost every other post!
Make a shepherd's pie or chilli a couple of days before you leave and keep it in the cooking dish - take it with you on last trip and put in oven in new house. So much more satisfying to eat home cooked meal after moving (disclaimer - I'm a coeliac so take away is risky at the best of times).
