To ask you for the things your parents taught you/ did that you just do without thinking??

So tonight is like a zoo on the ward im in, people in and out all night. I'm trying to sleep but I can't. My mum came up today to visit me and we were talking about her new dishwasher and I was thinking about that and how when I was a kid the finish powerball things came out and when I 7 I got to put the tablet in the dishwasher

I remember my dad making this massive deal about how you shouldn't touch the tablet- especially the red ball and really drilled it home. So I used to open the tablet and then squeeze it into the tray in the packet never touching the tablet. I still do that today! It was probably because my dad thought I might eat it but I still do the weird dishwasher stuff.

I once heard of a woman who chopped her bacon in half- binned one half and cooked the rest. Her DH asked why bacon was so small and she said that her mum taught her to do it that way, so they asked the Mum and she said that her Mum had taught her that way- they asked the Granny why she chopped the bacon in half and she said that her pan was too small to cook a whole piece of bacon!! 😂 hilarious!

Also my mum took meat out of the freezer and put it on the microwave (because it's out of the way) so I did the same but DH will pick it up and put it on the cooker as that's what his mum does as her microwave is integrated... really annoys me! Although I've started putting it in the fridge because good hygiene..

So please help me get through tonight with your funny things your parents did that you just copied until you thought about it!

Pouring the water in your glass before the squash... sounds ridiculous but I got to about 20 before being informed that that's not the correct way of doing it! Always water first in my parents' household, never occurred to me that it was actually really dumb. That bacon one is hilarious by the way

@mojito55 that's funny! I can never get it to go all the way through the water if I do it like that! It's really watery at the top and acid at the bottom!

I removed the stalks from mushrooms during a cookery class at school as that was the norm at home. The teacher couldn't understand it and told me I was wasting half of the food. No idea why mum always removed stalks!!

Mojito I do that and it drives my Mum mad, so not sure where I get it from. Mine is that eggs are kept in the fridge. When I got married my exh kept taking them out and I kept putting them back. My argument was that why would fridges come with egg holders if they weren't meant for eggs. (This was not the reason we split up by the way)

Another mushroom peeler here. Also my mum always dilutes vinegar, because her mum did. I have stopped doing this within the past 5 years or so as my DH thought it was odd.

I stopped peeling mushrooms but still destalk them unless button mushrooms. I never put new shoes on a table. I'm not in the least superstitious so can't explain why I do it.

American eggs need to be kept in the fridge, I don't put mine in the fridge because they crack when you boil them. When you buy them they are not in a fridge.

I'm much more logical than my mum was. She used to drag the coffee maker over to the tap, until she saw me use the jug to fill it.

She also would never pass salt in to your hand or take it from you, it had to be put on the table.

I keep ketchup in the fridge oh doesn’t. My argument is that it says that on the pack after opening. He says he hates cold ketchup.

Americans keep their eggs in the fridge because their food standards mean they have to be washed before being boxed, in order to remove poop and bacteria. That also washes away the good bacteria that keeps the eggs fresh longer. So they have to fridge them. (I think).

After I finish cleaning up in the kitchen in the evening I turn the under cabinet lighting off. As if to signal that the kitchen is closed. I only realised recently that I got this off my mum.

Gah, my husband peels veg into the sink because that’s what his mum does. Just do it straight into the bin instead of adding an extra step FFS! He doesn’t turn the tap on or anything, it’s literally a mess-making exercise and winds me up no end.

I'm just shocked that anyone ever used to bin half apiece of bacon instead of cutting it in half and using the pan twice!

I am marvelling at how small a pan must be to be unable to fry a bacon rasher.

I iron with my left hand. I’m right handed but my mother was a leftie. She never taught me or anything I guess I just picked it up from watching her.

I stand up if the queens appears on TV because my mum and dad always did it.

DH removes the mushroom stalks it drives me insane! I sweep my kitchen rather than hoover as that's what my mum does, although this is probably common place. Most of my friends vacumn!

I wonder how many of these go back even further - your Mum does things because her Mum did them, and her Mum before her (obviously not the dishwasher tablet thing!

I eat my toast cold becasue Mum doesn't like the butter melting into her toast and making it soggy, so we always had cold toast.
