AIBU to ask if DGD would fly alone at age 14?

Is it too unsafe?

The airline will allow it but there's no 'chaperone' service. Will it be too difficult for her - to dangerous?

Would you as a mum think it's not appropriate? I don't want to open a can of worms or raise hopes that might be dashed.

I'm quite surprised at the young age children are allowed to travel without adults.

Lots of things to consider - thank you everyone. I'm at the Paphos end and mum would be at Bournemouth end - they're about 30 mins from the airport and I'm a bit closer to mine. They do recommend a parent remains until take off but she would have phone contact. My daughter has been caught up in delays for up to 3 hrs at Paphos but they don't let you out if the flight is eventually going.

I would pay to be separated from my children on flights... Grin Exiguous.

italiancortado Have you actually looked for flights? Because at the moment there are no direct flights between those airports.

There is roughly one flight a month once the weather gets warmer - it was the first thing I checked and I also asked TUI what their unaccompanied travel age limit was - they said [via Agent Dave on the talk to someone whatsit thing] 16 years.

I'm afraid I wasn't kind and gentle in response and just asked 'is that correct'? as I'd already seen on their T&C's it was 14. He wasn't very Agenty at all.

Depending on the age of the minor, Aer lingus may allow minors to travel unaccompanied, but may require special permission. Minimum age for flying alone: 12 years old. ... Children without this completed form will not be allowed to fly. Children under the age of 12: Must be accompanied by an adult 16 years or older.

according to the internet

14 is old enough depending on the child! i did at that age and even now airports feel like one of the safest places to be. Impossible to be snatched, or kidnapped as such in an airport! Where I live anyway, the police stop you for looking suspicious if you even look at them the wrong way ha!

UPDATE:

I did ask and at first DGD said a great big huge YES. I explained that it was good we'd got past the first step because it was something we both wanted to do but there were more steps to go. I asked if there were things she could think of we needed to take into consideration.

Bless her she replied mentioning a risk assessment.

Anyway after some emails she said it would be something she would love to do when she was 15 or 16 and I replied saying great, there's plenty of time and that I was so pleased she could be honest and not feel she has to say what she thinks the other person wants to hear.

I think part of her decision was based on me asking if she travelled on the bus alone or out with friends - so thank you to the pp who mentioned those.

Roll on 2019/20
