To think I am not being unreasonable!

We live in rented property.
A few months ago teen dd left her drink on the floor and kicked it over by accident. I wasn't pleased as it was a bugger to get out but stuff happens.
I did however insist that drinks were not left on the floor.

On no less than seven occasions in the last eight weeks she has left her drink/cup on the floor and then forgotten and knocked it over.

Last week she had left it under her bed quilt so it couldn't be seen and I knocked it over so apparently that's my fault...

The carpet is now stained in various places despite cleaner and I'm not impressed especially as every time it happens she has a big drama about how it isn't her fault.

Two days ago she did it again and I went bonkers. Tonight she has done it again within three minutes of being home.

I've now banned her from having a drink unless it's drunk in the kitchen and would I also be unreasonable to make her pay towards a new carpet as the carpet cleaner didn't get it up and landlord will go bonkers at our next property check?

Disclaimer to avoid drip feeding. She is Dyspraxic so if she was dropping it I would have sympathy but if it wasn't on the floor like she has been told a billion times she wouldn't knock it over.

Apparently I am evil because 'she's Dyspraxic and cannot help it.'

She probably can't help it but I'd be inclined to ban drinks from the room too. Threaten her with a Tommee Tippee otherwise Smile

Craftylittlething · 01/02/2018 17:52

Why not give her a water bottle for drinks in her room and only hot drinks in a mug in the kitchen. You would be unreasonable to charge her for the carpet.

TheQueenOfWands · 01/02/2018 17:52

Can you buy her some sports bottles?

FittonTower · 01/02/2018 17:55

I'm dsypraxic and really clumsy. I don't have drinks unless I have a safe spot to put them on! I'm not a child, I can't help spilling stuff but if I didn't take care I'd ruin every carpet and bit of furniture I own!

Doctordid · 01/02/2018 17:55

She has water bottles, she leaves the top off or the pop up top up so we have the same affect :(

Totally reasonable to ban drinks leaving the kitchen. She's old enough to know that if drinks weren't on the floor they wouldn't get knocked over, and she's also old enough to not blame her rule breaking on dyspraxia.

GoldenBlue · 01/02/2018 17:59

Allow her only to drink water outside of the kitchen. We have that rule in our house, no drinks on carpeted areas.

Bambamber · 01/02/2018 17:59

She can help where she puts her drink. Being dyspraxic doesn't stop you from putting a drink up out the way. Like you say if she was dropping it or even knocking it over when trying to pick it up then fair enough. She's using her dyspraxia as an excuse.

I agree with pp about sports bottles

My youngest son has Tourette’s (as do I), so in my house we don’t have drinks anywhere that doesn’t have laminate floors/definitely nowhere near the sofa (if he tics he’ll knock them over...older kids follow the same rule so he’s not singled out). Water bottles upstairs.

He’s 7 - if he can understand this, your daughter can too.

songbird11 · 01/02/2018 18:02

I must admit I am so so grateful for wooden/laminate flooring, I always do this Blush

Frouby · 01/02/2018 18:03

I have banned drinks other than water upstairs for the same reason.

If she is struggling she sits at the table to drink. Also apple juice or lemonade is much better than vimto or blackcurrant.

I told dd she was allergic to blackcurrant unti she was 9 as I really didn't fancy getting it out of the carpets. We have hard floors downstairs now so it's much easier.

I think perhaps talk to the landlord and let them know you'll replace it as you leave otherwise you'll have the same issues and worries
