Did I have to pay this?

Had a filing repaired today at Dentist and when I paid they only charged me £20.60 I thought it was cheaper than normal but thought maybe as it was just a repair and only took 15 mins it was charged at check up rate.

Anyway they have just called and said I was charged the wrong rate and it should have been £56. I paid by card over the phon (after giving the women my card number 5 times FFS!) but could I have refused to pay?

I think legally you still have to pay, what did they tell you it would cost before treatment? NhS fillings are always the same amount so youcant really say that you always thought it would £20 if i5 came to it legaly. Private fillings will be dependent on how big the filling is and what tooth its on usually as to how much it costs, and it will be dependent on the dentist so could be much more expensive but they probably would be white fillings so would look better, although do exactly the same job.

MrsMaxwell I’m having the top of the range crown, whatever that is, but my point is that I wasn’t offered anything at £244, just this one at £550, or one at £500 Hmm.

AlbertaSimmons

That’s bad Hmm I hope it’s white, my Dentist said a white one is £500.

Omg £56 for a filling??? Where I work you're looking at closer to £200!! You got a bargain!!!

Tiredeypops · 01/02/2018 20:15

NHS dental charges for fillings (band 2) are advertised in all dental waiting rooms by law. £56 for a filling (that also includes any other check-up / scale / root canals / extractions you might also need isn't too bad if you value eating / speaking / smiling. NHS dentists are hard to find. Is it worth losing that for £30? Just do the adult thing and pay.

Tiredeypops · 01/02/2018 20:18

By not paying you would be taking money away from the NHS btw - the dentist will get paid the same regardless. Although since the dentist did the work they should be paid correctly. Just because you don't like your dentist didn't mean they didn't incur costs in placing the filling or pay for a five year degree.....

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 01/02/2018 20:21

I suspect if you hadn’t paid up they would chuck you off their nhs list for non-payment - there are signs saying they will in our dentist. It’s a bit like the HMRC I expect- if you get your tax wrong it’s your fault, if they get it wrong and you underpay it’s still your fault because you should have checked it Hmm

Ontheboardwalk · 01/02/2018 20:37

I wouldn’t like to be sat in a dentists chair knowing I’d underpaid him or kicked up a fuss when I had to pay what I actually owed him for my last lot of treatment

They have sharp objects that can hurt!

You had service A which costs X. They charged you Y in error.
You still have to pay X.
Seriously, you have to ask....

MrsMaxwell · 01/02/2018 21:24

I wanted to know where I stood legally - out of pure interest - if you read the post I paid straight away Hmm.

And you've had the legal response several times. Simple Confused

MrsMaxwell · 01/02/2018 21:36

Yes I have - thanks Smile

Of course you'd have to pay. They made a mistake. It's a tiny amount for filling anyway.
