AIBU to just want to buy a car without losing will to live?

current car about to go to car heaven (repairs cost more than its actually worth) so trying to buy a new car.

Even getting in one means giving your life story and all possible details. Then you get in it, and afterwards you say, ok, how much ...

so, no one seems to want to you actually buy a car these days, its all PCP so they give you those options but I'm a cash buyer (decided to be so I can at least scream no when they start down the PCP deals)

and when I said ok, give me the figures, can you just email it through as I have to go, I get an email saying 'can you come back in, it's all a bit complex and confusing so you will need an appointment?!?'

WHAT????

It's a car!!!

Good question Raindrops! They go to auction and are bought by independent car traders and are an excellent buy! I always buy these 3 year old cars with perfect service history and in like new condition and like £10k for a car that was £40k 3 years earlier! My dad is in the motor trade and specialises in these cars as they have been so well serviced and looked after as you have to on condition of your PCP deal! So I buy outright for cash keep for 12 months or so then sell for the same price again more or less have done for the last 8 years work perfectly for me they are a very good buy.

We have just been through this too - walked out of several large dealerships as they either ignored our list of wants, lied about pricing, wanted to charge £50 for an HPI check or ignored me (despite DH pointing at me saying “she’s the customer”).

The big car supermarkets are often selling on fleet cars at 3 yrs old, and are have a wide range so good for a browse if you don’t know exactly what you want. The “admin fee” (I have been told by another car salesman so make of that what you will) is the commission paid to the salesman.

You can get a rough idea of how much your trade in is worth on the Parkers website, plus it will give you price ranges for anything you’re looking to buy.

We also bought cash, and as the dealership we bought through is financially regulated we had to sign that we had gone through a needs statement and turned down finance, gap insurance, tyre insurance, small dent insurance etc. Didn’t take long as the salesman was smart enough to not push it.

We got the new car at a good price plus a decent trade for our old one, full service and new MoT, years warranty and a tank of fuel.

I agree with Cath2907 Fords of Winsford was excellent when I recently bought my car. They sell all makes as well and prices are competitive.

That’s a little optimistic I think! More like £18k unless it’s completely shagged with galactic mileage.

I've just been through the exact same scenario. I was shocked at how uninterested the salespeople were when I said I had cash. Arnold Clark were shocking! Would never go back to them. I eventually picked a car from Evans Halshaw, done all the paperwork (time I will never get back). They asked me to sign the invoice & it was £200 more than I anticipated. Turns out they had added an admin charge etc. I got up to walk out & told them I was prepared to pay the price on the car full stop. They called me back & agreed. I was so pissed off & in desperate need of the car I agreed but if I wasn't desperate I would have walked out of principle. Hope you find the right car soon.

When did these "Admin fees" creep in? We bought our 2 cars at different dealerships and neither of them had an admin fee or any add ons. The only thing they tried to sell me was that insurance that covers the difference between the low value that your insurance Co would give you in the event of an accident versus the actual value of replacing the car. (Gap insurance?) They can't get past that on the computer screen to complete the sale without going through it all with you!

“Admin fees” are a car supermarket thing, not a dealer thing.
