To hate a video when a paragraph will do?

So a FB group that I'm in is closing shortly to move to a subscription only model... easy enough to understand, right?

So why on earth does this require a video, quarter of an hour in length, to say that?

Also see: Charity videos where a heartbreaking story is told whilst someone does a daily mail sad face holding up bits of card with writing on at such a slow pace that I lose not only empathy but the will to live.

I understand not everyone is a quick reader so why not just write the full text out for people to read at their own speed!

Okay, rant over!

I agree with you.

CrazyExIngenue · 01/02/2018 10:52

People don't read anymore. They need visuals. It's a by product of the social media age.

ginghamstarfish · 01/02/2018 10:53

Probably get more money for video ads ...

addler · 01/02/2018 10:53

The worst is news 'articles' where it's actually just a video. Just tell me what happened ffs.

TheWizardofWas · 01/02/2018 10:56

drives me mad. My DS looks at videos for instructions always and I just want to read a few lines.

CaptainHarville · 01/02/2018 10:56

So much of my training is now delivered like this. I have to sit and watch a 20 minute video to be trained when the same content would have been covered on a page of A4 paper. Such a waste of time!

YANBU!

TressiliansStone · 01/02/2018 11:07

Oh dear god I hear you.

Some of the sites I use for research have now done this: a 20 min video when all I want to do is find out how the new Advanced Search function works, or the new tagging of bookmarks. With text I can use cmd-F and just find the bit I need.

A video? Are you expecting me to watch a 20 min video every time I want to remember the precise instructions for your particular site's variations on Stupid Search (you know the type: only one search box and returns 13,736 results which have half-a-word in common with what you actually searched for).

TressiliansStone · 01/02/2018 11:13

What's worse is I actually have very poor processing when I'm tired, and struggle to take in information from audio or video - never mind retain it. And that's from a short video, never mind a long one I have to watch all the way through to find the relevant bit.

I get that dealing with text is an accessibility issue for some people, but dealing with video is an accessibility issue for me.

Text and video both on offer = ideal.
Video supplanting text = just changes which group of people are disadvantaged.

robertaplumkin · 01/02/2018 11:13

AGREE.

The other day I wanted to run the washing machine with a soda crystal load as you do. Check quantity ☝🏽 I thought. Had to find iPad, navigate to page USING A QR CODE LORD GIVE ME THE STRENGTH, only to watch their verbose instruction video. Absolute waste. Of. Time. Fgs.

Butterymuffin · 01/02/2018 11:16

Oh GOD yes. Give me a paragraph (or two) of text any time!

exexpat · 01/02/2018 11:25

Oh, I hate the video clips popping up everywhere so much. I read so much faster than video plays, and take in information so much better by reading than listening.

My local paper website has taken to attaching videos (often completely irrelevant, e.g. a story about a particular local crime will have a video about 'what to do if you are arrested' attached) which auto-load and follow you around the screen, and require you to click on a tiny highlighted word at precisely the right moment if you want to stop them. Who decided this was a good idea?

Also, podcasts. No thanks.

specialsubject · 01/02/2018 11:26

oh yes. some fool prancing about in a video when one paragraph of text would say the same and be quicker to load. Maddening.

dingdongdigeridoo · 01/02/2018 11:27

Video is an absolute waste of time on social media. People only watch about 6 seconds of it, on average. I used to work in a role that involved social media and clients were adamant that they wanted these expensive videos to liven up their pages, and wouldn’t be talked out of them.
