To think this name is a bit too unusual...

I was being nosy on FB earlier and saw someone I went to school with.

She's had a baby boy and called him 'Chip' - it's definitely not short for anything, I saw the birth announcement. That's his proper name.

I'm all for variety, different names etc but thats too far isn't it?! Or am I boring? Grin

Mind you, I did think a friend had named her daughter Button as everything was referred to as such. But it was just a nickname for Bianca.
And I announced the birth of my son with the name Kosmo, as a joke, because people I know would hopefully realise I would never give my child an outlandish name

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 01/02/2018 18:26

Did she get it from Family Guy, Peter Griffin's vestigial twin?

To think this name is a bit too unusual...

I'm American and have never met a Chip, though if (IF: I'm not sure) it was ever a popular human nickname in previous generations, it fits right in with the current trend for "old lady/man" names, which is kind of a hipster-inspired fad.

I did have a bunny named Chip when I was little. It seemed like a good pet name because of the Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers cartoon that was popular in the US at the time. This is my most immediate association: cute, naughty chipmunk, so Chip is more of a pet name, like Socks or Spot, etc, and unusual for a human.

I've never met a Chuck or Hank under the age of about 65, but I did have a Grandpa Chuck (Charles).

always2ndbest · 01/02/2018 18:33

I know of a new baby called Agadu.

BuzzKillington · 01/02/2018 18:50

It's quite cute as a nickname, but silly as an actual name.

But then, I think Buddy is an idiotic name and I know of 2 born in the last 2 years.

The only Boomer I've ever heard of is a female character from Battlestar Galactica.

Has anyone heard of spike

Only in Buffy the vampire slayer.

I think we have the same cultural references Grin
Now, any idea why 'Chip' calls to mind a teenager in 1950s America, sitting in a diner with his arm round a cheerleader?!

PumpkinPie2016 · 01/02/2018 18:55

I think it's an awful choice of name!

Especially if it isn't short for anything - poor kid is stuck with it!

Honestly, why do people feel the need to do this!

Goldmonday · 01/02/2018 19:08

It's a cute name but seems more appropriate for a dog

Mummainwonderland · 01/02/2018 19:10

I know a child named Anemone. And another called Jupiter Confused

suzy2b · 01/02/2018 19:25

No one remember the tremaloes (don't know if that's how you spell it) Chip Hawks and the one hit wonder that was chesney Hawks chip was or is his dad

Arborea · 01/02/2018 19:36

I know a Jove (pronounced as in 'by Jove').

Ginburee · 01/02/2018 19:56

Chip is an awful name to me. I have a very short name and won't out myself here but it was popular in the 70's.
I hate it being lengthened for a nickname and gave my children long names that they can shorten by choice.

For example Christopher, Alexander, Katherine, Charlotte etc.

Clearaschristal · 01/02/2018 20:47

It's used in the States as a nickname, NOT a proper name. I've certainly never heard of it being used here in the UK.

PurplePenguins · 01/02/2018 20:50

Only ever heard it as a nickname. His surname was Monk 🤣🤣🤣

Abbylee · 01/02/2018 23:03

My cousin married a Chip, aka, Charles. He is a monkey's butt...and about 65 yo.

manicmij · 01/02/2018 23:25

The child will be nicknamed Chippie. Let's hope he is a joiner in later life or sell fish and chips. Do some parents deliberately set out to be cruel to their children.

I went to school with a Chip. It wasn't his real name. I wouldn't say it was common here; he's the only one I've ever met and I meet literally hundreds of new people a year through work.

There was a football player here in Cincinnati named Boomer. This was also a nickname, his real name is Norman.

CosyLulu · 02/02/2018 04:48

Agado? Seriously?

I think Chip will be very fed up with that name as he grows up. Unless he changes his surname to Sandmayo.

Addy2 · 02/02/2018 04:56

Isn't boomer an Aussie word for kangaroo? Also, in the original Battlestar Galactica, I believe Boomer was a male character, as was Starbuck. The genders were swapped in the remake.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 02/02/2018 05:43

Is Chip's surname O'Lata? Grin

Lovely Wodehouse facts Tarty and LittleLights, I’m intrigued, where do you get your stats from? Love a good stat me Smile

Yura · 02/02/2018 06:19

Reminds me of my (big, rugby player body) colleague called "georgie". its his full name, people always grun if he introduces himself/they see his email (our emails are our names, no changes allowed). definitely doesn't do him any favours

DILfromhellmaterialApparently · 02/02/2018 23:20

Erm ........ could be outing ..... but I have a sibling ..... his name is Chipp ...... it’s his real name ....... not a nickname ........ it’s obviously normal for me ........ I’ve probably had a rougher deal having been known as Fish whilst at the same primary school 🤔
I don’t think he’s suffered too much from it ......... he may have a different view 😂
