Paying to reserve a sun bed.

Would you do this?

I have just seen this on the news that one company is doing this.

I personally think they should just ban people from reserving them with towels.

AIBU?

@80sMum how could there possibly be room for a sunbed per hotel room bed?!

happinessischocolate · 30/01/2018 09:29

When we went on holiday last year the life guards went round and put cards on all the unoccupied reserved beds, they then went round again 30 minutes later and if the card was still there the towels got taken and a note left to say where the towels were.

Perfect way of dealing with it and the reservers had to do the walk of shame to the lifeguard station and go through all the towels to find theirs.

dameofdilemma · 30/01/2018 11:38

How about Sun loungers that have an electronic swipe for your room card. If it isn't swiped every 30 mins then a big red light goes on above the lounger to show it can be used by someone else.

I assert all rights in this idea and it may not be used without my consent. I'm going to make millions Grin

I stayed in a hotel in Majorca last year and there were signs up saying that towels left on unattended sunbeds for more than one hour would be removed by reception. Reception carried through with the threat and they were. Was delighted to see it enforced.

k2p2k2tog · 30/01/2018 12:12

No I wouldn't. The sunbed stampede isn't something I've experienced to be honest although I have seen people reserving beds on the way to breakfast. We're not fussy about where we lie, don't insist on having the same spot every day, and aren't the types to lie frying all day anyway. If the kids are in the pool, DH and I are happy sitting anywhere close by under an umbrella with a book.

BusterTheBulldog · 30/01/2018 12:17

I’ve been at hotels that have done this, on your first day, if you want a sun lounger, you go out with the pool attendant and pick one, a tag is then placed on it with your room number and you keep for the duration of stay-it was lovely!!

taskmaster · 30/01/2018 12:23

A lifeguard or another hotel employee should move them even if they have popped for a dip. If getting an icecream etc only one person could go and partner/ friend hold it

Rubbish. If I have a couple of sunbeds with towels and bags and everything on it and I go for a swim, why should someone take all my stuff? And put it where?
People should not reserve loads of sunbeds when they aren't using them, but if they are using them but temporarily in the pool, hands off.

JustMarriedAndLovingIt · 30/01/2018 16:25

If I get to the pool and sew towels on chairs, I remove them and sit down. Bear in mind, I only do this once I have been looking for at least 15 minutes and am fairly sure the person has abandoned the lounger. In Crete, I did this and I had been in the seat 1.5 hours when an annoyed Dutch lady came over and told me to move but I said no. Why should I stand up in favour of a towel?!!

JustMarriedAndLovingIt · 30/01/2018 16:26

*see

taskmaster · 30/01/2018 16:28

If its just towels, then yes, remove. But don't steal the loungers of people in the pool.

TroysMammy · 30/01/2018 16:30

You should be given a coloured band when you get a sunbed. Once your time is up off you pop and someone else gets the bed. A bit like in the swimming pool after an hour, "all those wearing red bands out".

TroysMammy · 30/01/2018 16:31

I'd happily police that and if you over stay your allotted time a drenching with a bucket of icy water Grin

sweetheart · 30/01/2018 16:32

We stayed in a hotel in Cyprus once where you were allocated your sunbeds on arrival - it was AMAZING!!!! Best holiday, no setting alarms or taking it in turns to get up super early to go and reserve sun beds.

It's a bit disappointing they are suggesting charging for it when there are already a handful of hotels out there that will do it for free. Having said that I would pay for it to stop the 6am wakeup calls when on holiday.

budgiegirl · 30/01/2018 16:44

I’ve seen this done too, it works very well. No one needed to get up at the crack of dawn, or remove other peoples things, or get in a row with chair hogs, because there were always plenty of loungers available when needed. I wish all hotels did this

thenightsky · 30/01/2018 16:52

happinessischocolate That card system sounds ideal. Would you mind sharing which hotel this was?

When I'm looking for holidays to book, I always cross check with trip advisor by typing the words 'sun bed' into the search on hotels I like the look of. This brings up the reviews referring to sunbed issues, be they lack of or plenty.

madeyemoodysmum · 30/01/2018 17:20

It's a crap idea and why I would never go all inclusive. You pay enough already.

Nope villas
Britain
Or small hotels for me.

madeyemoodysmum · 30/01/2018 17:22

Sewing towels on is a great idea

happinessischocolate · 30/01/2018 20:34

Thenightsky it was Hotel Zafiro Tropic in Alcudia, Mallorca, totally fab hotel and location

BusterTheBulldog · 31/01/2018 09:45

Or sunrise pearl in Protaras -that’s where we had it, was so lovely and loads of room!

sweetheart · 31/01/2018 10:34

No ours was Capo Bay Hotel in Protaras - maybe it's a thing in Protaras lol Grin

Sennelier1 · 31/01/2018 18:02

If I felt I wanted to spend my holidays laying on a bed next to a pool I would go to an indoor-swimming-water-play-paradise, you know, with the slides and stuff like that? Every country has them! Less travel, cheeper, near-certainty of having your sunbed. Some of my friends with young children do that, like in CenterParks, and they love it. They even have a children's disco in the evening! Since I prefer citytrips and sightseeing, the whole discussion about towels on sunbeds leaves me to be a rather flabbergasted onlooker 😊

icepop9000 · 31/01/2018 20:10

The thing is this still won't work as everyone will want the ones nearest the pool or bar or kids pool etc etc
I wouldn't book a hotel offering this because it means it going to be heaving.

Also if you have a reserved one and go out for that day it going to be empty and noone can use it. ..
