To want to take formula on a plane?

Abneyandteal19 · 28/01/2018 17:22

Can anyone help? Taking DC 3 months old on a plane, baby is FF - only going from Edinburgh to London for 24ish hours for a funeral, no check in bag at airport (can pay extra if it's really necessary)

So can I take bottles of pre mixed formula to last 24 hrs in carry on luggage?? Will security make me open them all? Therefore no use as they can only be open for 1 hour out of fridge? Would be fine for actual flight but not beyond?

Can you take powdered formula? Was worried this might look 'dodgy' on x ray machines etc??

Also can you buy pre mix formula once you are airside??

Never flown with baby before- in case you couldn't tell!!!

Please tell me all I need to know!

You can only take enough made up formula for the length of the flight through generally.

Check the airports website they will have clear information. I know at Manchester you used to be able to pre order the ready made from boots to pick up when through customs

Thequeenisdeadboys · 28/01/2018 17:26

Imagine you will be able to take the unopened cartons of formula on. Not sure. Would email airline direct.

BoredOnMatLeave · 28/01/2018 17:27

I'm not sure they will let you take 24 hours worth, how many is That? About 8? I took 4 no problem. But if you've left enough time and there is a boots at the airport you can book to collect in the departure lounge. Or there will no doubt be somewhere you can get them in London

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/01/2018 17:27

Most airports seem to have a boots / superstition airside where you can buy it.
If the cartons are over 100ml I don't think you could take through security, but if you check FAQ for the airport or airline, there's probably something on there.
Don't have kids so no first hand experience.
Powder would be fine and I'm sure the pub or restaurant would give you hot water if you asked, as will the airline. Airlines also warm jars of food etc for older babies.

ArnoldBee · 28/01/2018 17:28

Just order it from the chemist where you fly from usually a week or 2 in advance and collect it after you've cleared security. I took 30 bottles of pre-made sma on the plane in hand luggage to Fuerteventura this way.

ineedwine99 · 28/01/2018 17:29

Hi OP, our baby food pouches were never opened, they had a machine they put them in to check. We took pots if formula powder, no issues there, cafe post security gave us hot water. Can also order ready made to the airport if they have a boots

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/01/2018 17:30

Superdrug not supposition!
There are shops as you exit in the London airports too.

blueskyinmarch · 28/01/2018 17:31

I don't think you will be able to take 24 hours worth of already made up formula with you, i imagine you can only take one made up bottle. There is no reason not to take powdered formula in your hand luggage. It won't look dodgy. I would take an unopened tin in case they decide to look in your bag. There is a Superdrug airside in Edinburgh. They probably stock ready mixed cartons. You could call them and ask?

mrsmonkey14 · 28/01/2018 17:32

Had to post as you’re getting some misinformation. Don’t know about Edinburgh but at Gatwick they would scan the ready made formula separately. You are not made to open Any of it (obvs it would be no good then). You will be fine taking enough that you need for the journey (I always allowed for delays too - would be awful if you were stuck without enough for baby who isn’t yet eating anything else).
I would take ready made and your sterilised bottles (again, enough bottles for journey plus delay).
You will easily be able to buy ready made formula (assuming it’s a common one) in London for your return.
As noted above many airports have a Boots airside where you can buy formula, and you can pre order 5 days ahead usually.
Good luck, you will be fine.

Frazzled2207 · 28/01/2018 17:34

If you are getting it or picking it up after security on your outward flight you could theoretically take as much as you want, I think.

mrsmonkey14 · 28/01/2018 17:35

To add - I would take 24h worth if me, and if challenged argue that it’s needed in case of delays. I would be surprised if they took any off you. That is your baby’s only source of sustenance, it would be pretty serious situation if you were left without enough.

MsVestibule · 28/01/2018 17:36

When I flew, I just bought the ready made formula after I'd gone through security. You can buy enough for 24 hours, then if you know your baby will need a feed on the plane on the way home, just buy another one at the London airport, again after you've cleared security.

Olicity17 · 28/01/2018 17:36

They wont let you take it on board. Either buy ready made once through. Or take powered.

BrazzleDazzleDay · 28/01/2018 17:37

We've regularly flown from edi with between 8-10 bottles of cow and gate with no issues.

CMOTDibbler · 28/01/2018 17:38

You can take powder, no problem, but unless your baby is on a hard to find brand, you can pick up cartons of ready made airside in Boots (and WH Smith I think).
Then pick some up at Boots airside in London - are you flying into Heathrow? Its a bit late for you, but for anyone else, you can reserve milk online www.heathrow.com/shops-and-restaurants/shops-a-z/boots with the link on this page 48 hours in advance.

mrsmonkey14 · 28/01/2018 17:38

I forgot to say sorry for your loss.
You also asked what else you need to know - my advice is to take more spare outfits for baby (and spare outfit for you) than you thought. In case baby sicks/explosive poos on you inflight.... ditto lots of wipes.
If baby takes a dummy that will be helpful for take off /landing. If not try to feed them then.

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 28/01/2018 17:40

I’ve been away twice recently with DD (both European flights) and both times taken 6 bottles of pre-made formula - the 200ml Aptamil bottles - and one already made up Baby bottle. They’ve never questioned the quantity (or indeed asked me where I was flying to) and they will simply take the bottles off you when you go through security and pop them in a special machine to scan. Very easy - absolutely no problems. Both times we flew from Heathrow.

PenguinsandPandas · 28/01/2018 17:41

When we went you had to open it and taste it, job for DH. Wink

You could buy as much as you wanted after the controls from Boots as long as you are still within the hand baggage limits obviously.

Shoeshiner · 28/01/2018 17:42

I've recently flown out of and back to Gatwick. We took ready made cartons of formula. They have a machine that scans such liquids (also baby food pouches etc). Didn't have to open anything. Just scanned and through we went. We did also pick up a few more cartons in Boots once airside for good measure.

LIZS · 28/01/2018 17:45

Can you just buy it there, or ask family to get some in.

Scoleah · 28/01/2018 17:46

We packed Pre made formula cartons (which I forgot and had a row about by airport staff) but they were fine with them, scanned them and away we went!

Abneyandteal19 · 28/01/2018 17:56

Thanks everyone- that makes sense!

So focussed on what to pack I had forgotten that of course all the shops in London will also sell it! Not an unusual brand- Aptimel Pro Futura.
Will take two in bag then pick up a couple airside just in case of delay.

Will ask my cousin to get some for when we are there.

Thanks for the tips on what else to bring - hadn't thought of spare top for me!

Yes LO will take dummy for take off and landing.

Flying BA do you think staff will hold the baby while I collapse Pram / need toilet etc?

I’ve flown with my DD lots and she had prescription formula so less easy to source. You’re allowed to take enough premade formula in bottles to last your trip and any possible delays. So for that short journey you could take 2-3 made up bottles. Security won’t open them, they go in a machine to be checked.
We would then fly with cooled boiled water in other bottles. And formula in measured out pots. We have also flown with opened and unopened boxes of formula. All been accepted no problem.
And off your baby’s is on a generic brand formula you’ll be able to buy at the airport both sides of the journey and cafes in the airport will give you boiled water.
