To back to the ward and refuse to leave?!

I know it's in AIBU and thats bad but I need advice.

Ive had a uti for 3 weeks now on 3 different antibiotics. On Thursday I went to A&E and it admitted for a kidney infection, had 3 doses of IV antibiotics and was released with Cipro for a week.

I had a phone call from the dr this afternoon saying that my blood cultures have grown Staphylococcus Aureus, which is unusual in a uti. She said she'd ring me back once the microbiologist had done a sensitivity test on the bug and see if I'm on the right antibiotics. She hasn't yet and now it's shift change and no one knows what's going on.

My issue is- do I take the antibiotics tonight or leave it incase they ring tomorrow and say no take these instead... also they said to come back in if I felt shit again and I have a temp of 38 and the back pain is back. So do I go to the surgical assessment unit I was on last night or A&E?

Gah it's such a mess!! Please help!

@RavenclawRealist the blood cultures came out of the canula. As did the ABG and standard bloods

When they call you back I would say this then as it could well be a contaminant! But don't stop antibiotics till they say!

Kidneyschmidney · 28/01/2018 00:29

They actually just rang and want me to go back in so off I go.

Agree re contaminant possibility, Staph is part of our normal skin flora, so can easily be transferred via mishandled canula insertions. Even more likely if your urine growth is different, do you know what the urine culture grew?

RavenclawRealist · 28/01/2018 00:36

Good luck op do make sure you say re possible contamination so the can take fresh cultures important your treated correctly hope your feeling better soon

Kidneyschmidney · 28/01/2018 00:49

@Mumto2two urine grew ecoli and Staph A

ThisIs

There are specific infections where quinolones are the best choice and are thus 1st line. Trusts also have their own microbiology guidance, based largely on local sensitivity data. OP also says she has had 3 antibiotics prior to this.

There are many, many drugs we give that can cause serious side-effects. I'm not trivialising what happened to you, but most patient's do not have the problems you did.

I don't think it is appropriate to infer people should stop taking medication/should not take a certain medication they have been prescribed by their Dr when you cannot be in a position to know the reasons and information on which that decision was made by the HCPs.

Kidneyschmidney · 28/01/2018 02:08

@jacks11 I had trimethoprim for 3 days, nitrofrutoin for a week, ceflex for a week and IV and now on cipro. :/ it's never ending!! I can't have Penicillin so it's been slow. Back on IVs now. I'll take whatever I need to not get sepsis which is what they're worried about.

I was told not to take naproxenwith Cipro because Of heart arrhythmias

Are you just in overnight?

Kidneyschmidney · 28/01/2018 02:12

Not sure, it's a readmission so probably till Monday. I need new blood cultures and at least 3 doses of Iv antibiotics. I feel dreadful though so I'm glad I'm here

RavenclawRealist · 28/01/2018 02:17

New cultures sounds very wise glad they are getting you help

Kidneyschmidney · 28/01/2018 02:25

Thanks for all your really helpful advice and kind words. My DH thought I was being a drama llama and sent me for a shower (it's his thing- tired? Shower, sad? Shower ill? Shower) and I missed the call on my phone so they rang him instead so he spoke to the dr and was like oh okay yes I'll bring her in.

Hope it gets sorted soon op.

But you can't get an ABG from a cannula, would have been a VBG which gets slightly less/different results

Mumto2two · 28/01/2018 08:38

Interesting it's grown both, you are definitely in the best place OP. Hope they get you better soon.

lougle · 28/01/2018 14:02

Well done, your patience has paid off Smile. You're in the right place, with people that know your history and can get you well. I hope you start feeling better soon.

Mrsmadevans · 28/01/2018 15:36
