Wibu not folding

I was on the bus earlier, when I got on there was already a pram on. It was empty but had shopping backs inside the seat. It was in the wheelchair space behind the bars (london buses) so I put mine next to it (not in the wheelchair space) The lady and her 2 year old were sat at the back of the bus, half way through the journey a wheelchair user wanted to board, a man from the from came down and told me (I couldn't see as it was dark outside) anyway I pointed out I wasn't actually in the wheel chair space. So the man called up to the lady that was an asked her to fold her pram, she got up and folded it but I couldn't help but feel slightly guilty for not offering but then her pram was empty and she was in the space but because I came on after her I wondered if I was wrong but I just left it and didn't say anything. Wibu?

Very unreasonable. Ever tried to get a wheelchair into the slot. You do actually need quite a wide turning circle to get it in safely.

Ginger1982 · 27/01/2018 19:51

So, no one with a pram should get on a bus Incase a wheelchair user gets on? The OP said she wasn't in the space. You shouldn't feel guilty OP.

There was a lot of space and she easily got it in once the empty pram was folded. Anyone who gets london buses knows there space for a pram and a wheelchair one side is for the pram one side is for the wheelchair. The lady with the empty pram was parked in the wheelchair space I was in the pram space next to it.

I live in London, and the rule is, prams can use the space until it's needed by a wheelchair. Which is what happened to you today. I have never heard of this "one pram space, one wheelchair space" thing - I realise that one bit of the floor often has a wheelchair drawn on it (on some buses) but that doesn't mean the pram parked on the adjacent bit of floor has special privileges. Really, if there are two prams and one of them needs to fold, then they need to work it out among themselves. Usually it's the person who got on last who needs to fold, so the other pram owner was being nice to you by folding hers - but not unreasonably so, because like you say she wasn't really using it. Hope you said thanks though!

Ummm the wheelchair side is where the backrest if and the bar for the wheelchair users to hold which also has the special wheelchair bell! Are you sure you've been on a bus in london? lol they ask the wheelchair user to position themselves with the wheelchair back against the backrest thing.

I think whoever gets on second should fold their pram, but then she didn't have a child in hers so 🤷‍♀️

lookingforthecorkscrew · 27/01/2018 20:13

There’s no dedicated pram space on London buses. You get off if a wheelchair user gets on.

Toffeelatteplease · 27/01/2018 20:16

Next to it towards the back of the bus or next to it in the aisle?

You realise you have to back into that backrest don't you the wheel chair doesn't glide sideways in

ThisLittleKitty · 27/01/2018 20:19

See picture for example. That is definitely the wheel chair side. It's quite clear to see hence the back rest and button. I was where the lady in the pic is. The empty pram was where the wheelchair user is in the picture.

Then I think the empty pram should have moved. And I wouldn't necessarily get off if a wheelchair user got on, I would do what I could to make sure we all fitted comfortably.

lookingforthecorkscrew · 27/01/2018 20:24

The other side isn’t ‘the buggy side’ though. Especially if the chair needs to manoeuvre on/off.

ThisLittleKitty · 27/01/2018 20:26

There was space to move on and off hence why I said we both fit in once the empty pram was folded. I can send you the link to that page where it says it's fine for a wheelchair user and pram users to be on at the same time if there's space. That wasn't my aibu though.

The pram needed to go. I'd have moved it if the owner hadn't done it quick enough. A pushchair next to it may be om. But yes if I hit the angle wrong I may have appreciated a little extra space.

With anything in the space I'm more likely to miss

Toffeelatteplease · 27/01/2018 20:34

No offence but unless youve maneuver a variety of wheelchairs into that slot you have no clue

TakeMe2Insanity · 27/01/2018 20:34

I have a personal hatred towards people who park the pram in the space and then remove the child from the pram to sit on a seat with them. I really think that is a waste of space. In that instance they really should fold down the pram.

I don't think you should feel guilty.

Rewn7 · 27/01/2018 21:14

Way I see it is:

The person in the way of the wheelchair space gets out of the way.

You weren’t in the way. She was so she had to get out of the way.

If she’d had any sense she’d have avoided taking up the wheelchair space and put her pram where yours eventually went. But she took a risk and therefore she had to move.

You did nothing wrong.
