Anyone give this a watch on BBC? Really hard to sympathise it's not a victimless crime. I like the florida way of managing sex offenders but would also to see investment in preventative services to begin with. I think this type of crime is very knee jerk

I was horrified by how easily they all lied about their crimes. (Pat and his mass-abuse, the ‘accidental child porn download’ guy and his molestation.)
I don’t know if I agree with the Florida system, seems like a great idea in theory but ultimately they do all need somewhere to live and a place for them like Miracle Village (where children are allowed to visit!) Just seems like they could re-offend so easily and no one would ever know/grass them up

Mulch · 28/01/2018 12:13

Yea the visiting children should be an absolute no. I can see why pat didn't want his crimes mentioned because they were bloody awful. I like the idea of signs outside/public knowledge and uber long probation

It was when Pat said that they were the children of offenders he’d helped - my mind went to the worst case scenario, I don’t understand how people could hurt children like that and then out their own children at such risk.
Uber long probation is an amazing idea, but the signs just seem like it makes them super vulnerable to vigilante attacks, which would increase the risk of re-offending because they want to go back to a place of comparative safety?

LittleMyLikesSnuffkin · 29/01/2018 11:45

I’m watching this now. I think the restrictions are fair but the fact that pat can have children at his home/office behind closed doors where no one can see....

Pat made me feel uncomfortable from the start. (Well they all did) He has wormed his way into peoples trust. That’s what sex offenders do and they seem to have a knack for that. And he- a sex offender who was in jail for 12 years- is seen as a mentor, a father figure to people who have committed similar crimes. Chilling.

I love Stacey but I was nearly yelling at the tv at one point because she seemed taken in and I was thinking “they’re most likely all minimising!” And oh look, pats kicked off and walked out Hmm when she was describing what he’d done.... yes I can see why and how he’s managed to get people on side with him. That’s the type of person he is clearly.

phoenix1973 · 29/01/2018 11:53

Pat was like a cornered rat when Stacey confronted him. I cannot believe he had kids left with him. Hes a controlling and manipulative person who has engineered this "refuge" to suit his own warped needs. He is the most dangerous one and can never be rehabilitated. Its like putting a snake with a mongoose. Worst, he's enabling or tempting other paedos too.
Ironic that theyre subject to strong restrictions with location and proximity yet its ok for him to live with other paeds off grid....with kids!

I watched this (as I do with all Stacey Dooley docs) with an open mind. What shocked me the most was the way that the criminals were all treated the same regardless of their crimes. Now I know they were probably all lying (as prooved by the older bloke) but I can't see how an 18 year old having sex with a 14 year old who claimed to be older is treated the same as someone sexually abusing younger children and distributing child porn. Again i know the guy may have been lying but the show didn't really delve into his past to clarify whether what he said was the truth.

I was absolutely dumbfounded at the people who leave their kids in the care of a convicted paedophile in a house amongst other offenders!

I found it interesting that the red signs outside homes were something that just seemed so common that people didn't really pay too much attention to. Again it wasn't addressed whether this kind of treatment creates vigilante justice, or whether it just addresses the publics right to know if a paedophile is living next door to them.

LittleMyLikesSnuffkin · 29/01/2018 18:41

I couldn’t decide what I felt about the signs warning that a sex offender lives at that address. On one hand it’s there, in front of you so everyone is aware of who they are and what they’ve done. But on the other hand does it lull you into a false sense of security? Or maybe I feel that way because Pat seemed to draw people in enough to leave their kids with him even though they know he is a convicted peodophile. I couldn’t get my head round that at all.

JawlineForDays · 29/01/2018 21:13

I don't understand why they can't just be shot in the head. I totally agree with the woman who said she would murder anyone who hurt her kids, I would love 5 minutes in a room with that beast at the end who molested the 4 year old.

Hatingliferightnow · 29/01/2018 21:22

I turned off when I heard the term child pornography! I deteste that term as I feel it indicated there has been a choice. It's child sex abuse images.

FissionChips · 29/01/2018 21:28

I was horrified watching , how can that Pat guy be allowed access to children?!

Baubletrouble43 · 29/01/2018 21:33

I'm with jawline. I'm a liberal leftie soft touch over loads of stuff except this issue. I agreed with the American policeman on the programme who said that our ( British) system made it look like we don't really care about our kids safety

Storminateapot · 29/01/2018 21:33

We watched it, I shan't be at all surprised if it turns out he's abusing those 'grandsons' he spends so much time with. He was all bonhomie until she rumbled the truth about him.

I felt a bit (a bit) sorry for the lad who had slept with a 14 year old who apparently lied about her age when he was 18. I know loads of girls I was at school with who were sleeping with older guys at that age, dressing & making themselves up and lying about how old they really were. It doesn't excuse it, of course, but his crime seemed less serious or likely to ever be repeated yet his entire life (and that of anyone who chooses to spend their life with him) is ruined forever.

Mulch · 30/01/2018 22:12

I did wonder if the guy who slept with a 14 year left out details or lied like pat, if it's true it does seem harsh

OP posts:
KERALA1 · 30/01/2018 22:43

Bet any money the guy who "slept with his girlfriend thinking she was 18" was lying through his teeth as well.

Storminateapot · 30/01/2018 22:47

It did cross my mind, but I would imagine the show checked out his story in the same way as they did for Pat, since he was quite heavily featured.

Hard to know.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 30/01/2018 22:53

Just watching this - the guy with the 14 year old girlfriend. So he thought she was 18 - and working? At college? It doesn't make sense.

hungryhippo90 · 30/01/2018 23:12

I watched this yesterday, in some ways I really, really thought Florida had hit the nail on the head, I was genuinely interested to see if they made it work, but there are serious holes in the way the system works, why are children allowed to live in Miracle? The simple fact these people shouldn’t be allowed around children should mean that children shouldn’t be able to go to these places heavily populated by paedophiles.
Their crimes sickened me, it takes a lot to shock me as a child sexual abuse survivor- but that Brandon’s crimes made me sick. He doesn’t seem to think he did anything wrong or that he is a bad person for what he’s done, and quite obviously will not get better. His sister is plain stupid because she will allow him access to her daughter when he’s off probation.
The situation with Pat will actually disturb me for a long time I’m sure, how can he have access to children having molested 11? Children!! He shouldn’t be allowed around children.

Not sure I believe that the guy thought his girlfriend was 18 but was 14, if he did then that’s very sad, but the one thing this programme cemented for me is just how much paedophiles will lie and try to make people believe that they are misunderstood, it was s mistake, an accident, a misunderstanding.

I believe that the signs outside of houses would be brilliant everywhere, none of the opportunity for people to conceal what they are.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 30/01/2018 23:18

Chris's girlfriend would be giving up so much to live with him. Forgetting what he's done - she's the one who'll suffer.

Ginkypig · 30/01/2018 23:18

I watched it yesterday.

The most shocking part for me was the tiny bit right at the end where Stacey Dooley asks Brandon (who for the whole program has talked about downloading images as if it's his only crime) if he had committed further offences and he admits to a contact crime on a three year old! If she hadn't asked him directly then it would never have been mentioned.
