Adult and child foods? A British thing?

I got bitched at yet again today by the group I meet with for lunch occasionally.
They find it very strange that my 3 year old eat “adult food”.
I have lived in 4 countries and have only ever come across this in Britain.
It is very strange?
Why would child’s only eat plain food?
My DD had calamari, for reference, incase that is odd. I am part Japanese so she is no stranger to fish.
Aibu to find it equally strange that some toddlers were still being fed mashed food?

Well then rather than saying ‘a British thing’ maybe it’s a ‘some people in Britain’ thing? I have lived in Britain for 28 years (also spent some years living in France, Italy and Spain) and it’s not something I’ve ever encountered in Britain. So maybe it’s the ‘people you hang around with in Britain’ thing.

StandardRussian66 · 29/01/2018 09:59

Which is why I ask the question. It has been my experience since I been in Britain which is why I ask is it a British thing.

YANBU - and the kids food is always beige. It's the same in the US though. Our DS eats from the main menu with us. He used to eat almost everything but at 3 is getting so much more fussy (so I'm glad we haven't been smug twats about it Grin)

Chienrouge · 29/01/2018 10:36

Well has the thread established for you that some people in Britain do this and some don’t?

ralfeesmum · 29/01/2018 10:36

Adult food and kiddie food? Way back in the hungry Thirties my grandparents would have had absolutely no truck with this kind of thing.

Adult and children alike ate whatever appeared on the table, if your were fortunate enough to afford three meals a day......

Very common though for families with money in the 30's, and well before that.

StandardRussian66 · 29/01/2018 10:40

It has proved that British people definetly do consider food that is for children and food that is for adults. But that to some it doesn’t matter what food the child eats, and some it does matter what the chil eats.

This being a UK website, and UK parenting is in effect being criticised, surely no one should be surprised if people get a tad defensive. I’m sure the OP will concur.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 29/01/2018 10:43

It has also been proved that in almost every country that any of us has lived in, it's exactly the same.

Some kids eat kid food.
Some kids don't.
Some parents choose kid food for kids
Some don't.
Some parents are mega smug about Chloe loving her broccoli and are heading for such a fall when Chloe asks them for a KFC and a cheese string.
Some people think calling squid calamari makes them sound dead clever and superior to those who give their kids fish fingers.

Nothing new under the sun is what this thread has proved. Now't else.

RoseWhiteTips · 29/01/2018 10:43

After all, the topic has generated over 500 responses. The Daily Mail may even be hovering...

So should Mumsnet ask for passports, before deciding who can post?

Or are furriners allowed if they are humble and respectful?

Perhaps only people who can prove the purity of the ancestors for several generations back should be allowed to pronounce on tricky questions?

RoseWhiteTips · 29/01/2018 10:49

Riiiight.Confused

CuriousHedgehog · 29/01/2018 10:51

When I was a child I was the world's fussiest eatier. I did, however, love calamari... (misses point of thread...)

Oh ffs.

Twofishfingers · 29/01/2018 11:00

Well... I am one of those foriners and I do find it odd when people come on this website and start making broad statements about any nationalities. The Americans are all like this, the Italians are all like that. The British all bring their children up in this way. French kids all eat snails. It is annoying. and stupid.

Chienrouge · 29/01/2018 11:02

It is annoying. and stupid

Exactly.

Even in your last post OP you said it has proved that British people definitely do consider food that is for children and food this is for adults.

I’m British, and I don’t. Food is food is food. So it’s another sweeping generalisation about an entire nation.

HarrietSmith · 29/01/2018 11:03

I'm sure that none of us have ever gone to another country and used our experiences to make general statements about its culture.

Chienrouge · 29/01/2018 11:08

Like I said, I’ve lived in a few different countries. I have never said ‘Spanish people do this’ or ‘French people do that’. Because that would be stupid.

Sirzy · 29/01/2018 11:10

Exactly perfume

It is also quite ironic that the op while complaining about being judged will openly judge other people!

StandardRussian66 · 29/01/2018 11:11

Who have I judged?
I have certainly had some opinions made true.

TatianaLarina · 29/01/2018 11:12

I see the generalisation fascists are here.

Chienrouge · 29/01/2018 11:15

If by ‘generalisation fascists’ you mean people who object to being considered one homogenous mass because you were brought up in a particular country, then yes I’m here Smile

TatianaLarina · 29/01/2018 11:21

I rather meant humourless officious pedants...

mytitshaveshrunk · 29/01/2018 11:21

WOW OP, I can't believe the shit you are getting on here. You do indeed know what bitching is, you are experiencing it now. I am British, born and bred. I am working class. I am a northerner. I have never understood why parents give their kids pizza, fish fingers, chicken nuggets and the like when there is so much better stuff on the adult menu. It does seem to be a peculiarly British thing. I have friends who do this at home as well. Whenever I was invited for dinner the kids would have eaten some nutritionally devoid crap as a "treat" before the adults were given something lovely. I've never understood the concept, never will.

Chienrouge · 29/01/2018 11:24

Ah, luckily that’s not me then. I have a great sense of humour... when things are funny.
