Adult and child foods? A British thing?

StandardRussian66 · 27/01/2018 16:15

I got bitched at yet again today by the group I meet with for lunch occasionally.
They find it very strange that my 3 year old eat “adult food”.
I have lived in 4 countries and have only ever come across this in Britain.
It is very strange?
Why would child’s only eat plain food?
My DD had calamari, for reference, incase that is odd. I am part Japanese so she is no stranger to fish.
Aibu to find it equally strange that some toddlers were still being fed mashed food?

God I use to be like OP pfb ate everything, pretty much weaned himself and we would take him to restaurants and show him off eating off the adult menu whilst watching other dcs on happy meals and the like. DC2 came along and was the fussiest eater ever and would only eat beige foods in restaurants shattering my belief that I was a superior parent and that if you expose them to the foods of the world early they would grow up to be gourmets.

TatianaLarina Sorry just re-read your thread! I think it’s so funny that you think Brexit Britain is worse than China’s and Russia’s serious issues 😂 think you need to do some reading!

What on earth are you talking about?

TatianaLarina · 27/01/2018 19:03

How is it xenophobic to feel lucky not to live somewhere with a horrific human rights record? Is it not lucky to not live in say, the Congo, either?

Ahh the Congo. Of course. Why not throw in India as well, and they you’ll have a full house.

You live in a county with an historically poor human rights record, as it happens.

TatianaLarina · 27/01/2018 19:04

Well Cherry most people understand why you don’t characterise large parts of the world as, say, “shitholes” or similar. I’m sure it would surprise you to know that the majority of the world really don’t long to be British.

You’d think. Not Cherry or Trump. Or Boris Johnson.

What is wrong with Russia and China?

They’re not Brexit Britain

You honestly think Brexit is worse than China’s human rights abuse? Daft woman

No one either suggested that China and Russia were 'shitholes' (apart from you) or said that everyone wants to be British. But pretending that the UK's (real and obvious) political problems are in any way equivalent to the ongoing human rights abuses in Russia and China is just being contrary for the sake of it, and pretty insulting to those campaigning (and often risking their lives) for change in Russia and China.

I don't understand why it is seen as been acceptable to stereotype any country and its inhabitants. Whether that be name calling or acting like a country can't parent properly or that they serve bland food.

Atticusss · 27/01/2018 19:07

Yes I hate this British culture. I resent paying for a meal out as a treat and there only being chicken nuggets/fish fingers/burger on the menu for children. I'm not against those foods in moderation, but they are emergency can't be arsed to cook foods, so if we are eating out I want them to choose something that I can't be arsed to cook for them regularly.

80sMum · 27/01/2018 19:07

A few years ago we ran a food survey at school; we gave all the children a questionnaire to fill in. The responses held some surprises. For the question, "which food that is currently not offered as part of school lunches, would you most like us to offer?", the most commonly occurring response was "Olives."

There were quite a few traditional "kids meals" that were ranked among the least liked meals. As a result of the survey, we started having more variety in the salad bar and included olives daily; beefburgers were discontinued, as were hotdogs.

Cake20189 · 27/01/2018 19:07

MargaretCavendish Thank you for explaining this in a more eloquent way than I could!

Cake20189 · 27/01/2018 19:08

Atticusss It’s not British culture FFS

taskmaster · 27/01/2018 19:09

Yes I hate this British culture

I don’t mind the kids menus. I sometimes order from them for me.

If you hate british culture then i imagine you should go somewhere where the culture is more to your tastes..... kids menus cater for the masses and are cheap which is the appeal to many parents. You can always order off the main menu.

TatianaLarina · 27/01/2018 19:11

So when you said ‘thread’ you actually meant post. And when the OP asked why the countries were being attacked, and I replied because they’re not the UK, you defines the entire of two vast countries purely in terms of the human rights’ abuses in China. Ok. Because there’s nothing else in those counties of any value - not ancient Chinese culture, art and architecture, not Russian literature and music, nor either countries contribution to science and technology...

PrincessoftheSea · 27/01/2018 19:12

@Atticusss, what sort of restaurants do you frequent? You do know that in decent restaurants you can ask for them to make adult meals into childrens portions as well as improvise the childrens menu a bit. Obviously if you usually go to the standard chain restaurants, its going to be a bit shit whatever menu you order from as really its just microwaveable crap mostly.

My kids have eaten calamari too Hmm in ENGLAND. You're not as special and refined as you think, for one your post is tacky and ignorant.

Remy068 · 27/01/2018 19:14

Russian expat in Britain.
What is so wrong with Russia that you can't identify something you don't like about a country or culture?
I like the OP have lived in many countries (Russia, Ukraine, the UK, Australia, Central America and very briefly Japan) there are things I liked and disliked about each one.
I think it has very hateful undertones to suggest that you cannot complain and should be greatful to live in the uk to the point of shutting up if you don't like something. Britain has good things and bad.

I don't think OP is talking about child menus unless I have read it wrong. Child menus in eateries make sense because nobody wants to pay the same for a child and adult when the child will eat much less. It also makes sense to not provide food that is too exotic, spicy or salty for the children. It is safer because many will eat it. But I do not understand eating separately and different meals and also the expectations that children will only eat bland foods.
I raised four children and I have experienced surprise that my child would eat something that theirs wouldn't. My children could be fussy too though. Or slightly weird. My youngest son will only eat sprouts smothered in ketchup and mayonnaise Confused all children are different. But I do note that it is more common here for children's parents to hold them back from experiencing new foods I have seen it happen and it is disappointing to see a child asking for one thing and getting a bland substitute. Maybe it happens elsewhere but I have not seen that.

DullAndOld · 27/01/2018 19:14

Brexit alert! Brexit alert! nee naw nee naw!

StandardRussian66 · 27/01/2018 19:14

Where have I said that I think I am special? I just ordered what we wanted to fucking eat at the time.
