To not acquiesce to neighbour's request?

We spent this morning installing a new fence in our front garden. After 4 hours of back-breaking labour, I was sweeping up when our neighbour comes out and says she's not happy because we've got the 'nicer' side of the fence facing our way and not hers. She actually wanted us to turn each panel round so the flat side was facing her garden.

I thought she was joking at first so sort of laughed it off but no, she was being serious. I just muttered something about 'speaking to my husband' and went indoors.

Have I made a misstep in neighbourly etiquette or something?!

Love this thread.

As there is no law OP you can have the fence panels anyway you want them. Whatever convention decrees.

As for your type of fence, with slot in panels, the difference is quite subtle. I think your neighbour is very rude to wait till you have finished slogging all morning to come out and make demands particularly as you have also paid for the panels.

Too bad I say. She sounds a pain.

I loved FenceAuthority.com. As if .........😂😂😂😂

Your neighbour sounds like a proper Nit-Picker!

Your money paid for your fence panels so it's up to you.

I bet if she was having fence panels installed she wouldn't have any qualms about having the 'wrong' side facing you, would she.

Cheeky b*gger!

Your neighbours should be pleased that you paid for a 'naice' fence at all,
and not something that looks like recycled pallets!

I have the good side, as I paid and didn't give it a second thought.
My neighbours are such a pain, but didn't say a thing, other than my deeds say it must be very high - no it doesn't,
but wanted privacy, so he was in luck.

BEWARE if you go on holiday, I have seen neighbours switch fence around for good side!!!Shock
Everytime they are away!!!

It's pretty pedantic, pathetic, and spiteful to say 'I paid for it, so I will have the nice/smooth/flush side facing MEEEEEE!'

And the neighbour who didn't pay and yet is saying the nice/smooth/flush side should face MEEEEE is being selfless and normal?

Brilliant comment MyOther! I never understand this type of thinking. For example, if you ask for a fiver to cover petrol money the askee and their supporters will say how petty it is. Fine, if it's so petty, just pay up then!

Ask her who paid for it and if tehy are not happy put another row of fence panels up at her owncost on their side

My dad paid £900 for a fence and put the good side on my neighbours only because it was easier for them to do it die to my dad having bushes/ trees on out side which he didnt want to dig them up

our problem started when she sold the house and within the first week of moving in new neigbour painted it that horrible orangey red colour and it dripped through to our side !!!! We had paid paid extra to get the fence panels treated so it would look natural and didnt need painted at that time and it looked a mess on our side.. our new neighbour obviously had thought or ( had been told) the fence was put up by them

Vivianebrezilletbrooks · 29/01/2018 20:36

Having the fence panels on your side I think is not always done due to any form of etiquette, more due to being stronger against the wind depending on where you live/how windy it is where you live. Our previous house was on a corner and we put them up for privacy as there was a only a low wall before around the garden. We used to get strong winds there and they only ever came down even only partially the once(in 3 and a half-ish years) but then we had someone else install it and I'm just guessing that's why.

Petalflowers · 29/01/2018 21:33

Walked to work this morning and found myself looking at fence panels! On the quick, survey of new fences, I think,
It was evenly split 50:50, bit,I can't guarantee who installed the fences.

Housemum · 30/01/2018 11:14

Our neighbours to the left AND right both put up fence panels! (The right should be our responsibility, but the lovely people who have been here since they were built said that he'd chosen to adopt the boundary himself as didn't want to wait for builders to get round to fences!)

We have the posts on our side both sides - and as I didn't pay for them I couldn't care less! Hope you told your neighbour Hyacinth Bouquet to do one!!

KendalMintCakey · 30/01/2018 14:27

Etiquette would be the nice side faces the neighbour.

JuneBalloon · 04/02/2018 09:07

Surely it’s all down to curb appeal? We’ve just had a fence put up and the landscaper told us the choice was entirely ours. Having talked through the pros and cons we went for the posts on our side (which, IMO, look absolutely fine) purely for the afore mentioned curb appeal.

JuneBalloon · 04/02/2018 09:09

... asked DH how to spell ‘curb’ as I felt it was wrong.... He incorrectly informed me of the spelling - shouldve checked myself!!! Obviously I meant KERB appeal... Wink

MyOtherProfile · 04/02/2018 20:50

Definitely kerb appeal. But not really an issue when the fence is between two houses and not facing the kerb.
