I know it was U to be on the phone I was i the wrong etc but proper felt like I was back at school being told off!

I know it has the sign not to, just didn’t even think!!

Has anyone else had anything embarrassing happen today please make me feel better!

I had no idea that you can’t send a text from the inside of a car parked on a forecourt! Sorry, I realise that doesn’t answer your question.

Wow1234 · 26/01/2018 23:04

Why can't you use phones at petrol station? I know you shouldn't but why?

MiddleClassProblem · 26/01/2018 23:05

Isn’t it only if your filling with petrol? Are you sure it was meant at you?

PossibiliTea · 26/01/2018 23:07

Well firstly I feel a lot better already! Yeah a quick Google showed me it was fine, but as we were pulling away the cashiers were glaring at me!

I was a in the car with some one who was smoking . Same as you a loud voice over the tanoy saying please extinguish the cigarette, can the lady in the blue nova please extinguish the cigarette. My nan then got out the car the finish he get. The shame Blush

khajiit13 · 26/01/2018 23:07

I would assume it was aimed at sometime else

Julie8008 · 26/01/2018 23:08

The electronics from a mobile signal can ignite petrol vapour causing a 'fireball'. Yes it does happen, people have burned alive.

Do Not use mobiles at a petrol station! Ignorance is no excuse, petrol stations have had signs up about this for years.

Marmalady75 · 26/01/2018 23:08

I had that happen to me once. I was mortified. I’ve asked several people why it is and the most common answer is in case it causes a spark. Don’t know about anyone else, but my phone isn’t particularly sparky.

PossibiliTea · 26/01/2018 23:08

So 100% aimed at me but it was busy and erghhhh

But google says that science says it’s not even dangerous anyway. And I was inside the car Confused but anyway there are signs up I do realise that.

PhilODox · 26/01/2018 23:09

Surely the no phones thing is just for outside cars?
A spark could ignite spilled fuel... but not likely from inside a sealed vehicle.

marmiteloversunite · 26/01/2018 23:09

That happened to me too, about 8 yrs ago. I never use my phone in petrol stations now as I was mortified at the time. I feel your pain! ConfusedGrin

PossibiliTea · 26/01/2018 23:10

Julie I know! I’m stupid I shouldn’t have but help me out here haha!

OP posts:
MiddleClassProblem · 26/01/2018 23:10

Actually it now says that the spark myth is disproven and it’s about being aware of other vehicles whilst out the car.

It’s also possible they were doing it for their own entertainment.

mumpoints · 26/01/2018 23:10

Is it the same for ipads?

AmazingGrace16 · 26/01/2018 23:11

you're more likely to ignite a petrol station from wearing nylon clothes than you are a phone.

PossibiliTea · 26/01/2018 23:11

Marmite thank you! I mean yeah it does have the desired effect then obviously I won’t be using my phone again at a petrol station.

You are all already making me feel better thank you!

mumpoints I’ve jumped a level and now imagining you setting up a home office in an open boot whilst filling up

MyBrilliantDisguise · 26/01/2018 23:12

Ok now imagine a loud angry voice over the tannoy at a bowling alley saying, "Will the woman who has fallen over in the place marked "Do not walk" move back to the place she should have been in originally?"

Spam88 · 26/01/2018 23:12

I always use my phone while my DH is filling up, I always assumed it meant don't use them out on the forecourt (and also had completely forgotten you're not supposed to do that)

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 26/01/2018 23:12

I thought it had been disproved that phones can ignite petrol fumes. This was brought in in the 80s and the ban was to err on the side of caution. But thems the rules.

Rollonweekend · 26/01/2018 23:13

Never heard of that!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 26/01/2018 23:15

MyBrilliant sorry but Grin

SAMlady · 26/01/2018 23:15

Both Shell and BP have apps to pay using your mobile so it is safe if you're inside your car.

PossibiliTea · 26/01/2018 23:15

@MyBrilliantDisguise Grin it really wouldn’t surprise me if this happened to me

You're not alone - was checking a message when the Tesco tannoy asked me to switch my phone off too. Couple years ago
