To want to ban my two year old from YouTube?

I’ve got my flameproof knickers on for this because I know, I’m being lazy allowing my child to use a phone to keep him quiet for a moment, but I really don’t want him using YouTube any more.

We tend to let him look at our phones for a few minutes to brush his teeth (he hates it so the couple of minutes playing with the phone usually buys us enough time). Last week I heard my partner saying “no, that’s not nice!” and our son crying because the phone had been taken off him. Turns out he had been watching one of those ubiquitous ‘Mummy Finger Daddy Finger’ videos and it had animals fighting each other in Confused

I was upset about it at the time and now there seems to be news all the time about apps and videos aimed at kids being something horrible instead (like the Blaze app that went viral). I want to stop him using YouTube altogether and only have access to “safe” stuff like CBeebies content.

My partner says I’m overreacting and he’s got all his settings such that our son won’t see anything harmful. But I don’t really want to take the risk.

Who is BU?

Another way to change a nappy is to sit on the floor with them sideways and put your leg over so they can't wriggle away

We all parent differently. I let my toddler watch a bit of nursery rhyme songs or whatever on my iPad while I change him calmly. You think my way is lazy. I think your way is a bit violent and dictatorial. Let's just focus on our own parenting and stop worrying about others.

We didn't used to have screens. We also used to live in caves. Times move on. I use the iPad sometimes. I also do a LOT of playdoh and building towers and story reading. Agree unsupervised YouTube access is not a good idea but people should chill out over a bit of screen time.

Agreed MistressPage. All the self-congratulatory drawers hoiking about OMG PARENTS OF TODAY does is to get in the way of more rational discussion about how we can use technology safely with our children.

Also lets remember that the OP was posting for advice on a discussion with her partner who favoured a more lax approach.

Dont see anything wrong with letting a 2 year old watch youtube while supervised.

I recently banned my 7 year old watching youtube. Drifted onto inappropriate videos with swearing a couple times. As I'm not able to constantly supervise I felt it was better to remove the whole app. Now she just watches kids programmes on bbc iplayer

Is this a joke? No 2 year old should be anywhere near YouTube.

Oysterbabe · 27/01/2018 13:42

Fuck knows what would happen if people had to experience a few days of parenting young children with no internet or mobile screen deviceat alland just a colouring book, some nursery rhymes and the odd Disney video, like wot we did.

Well we'd be fine because most of us do that stuff with our kids all the time as well as occasionally letting them sing along to some songs on YouTube from time to time. Technology moves on.
Fuck knows what would happen if you'd had to parent without Disney videos like wot my grandparents did etc.

Why is a two year old using YouTube anyway?

BlurryFace · 27/01/2018 15:15

My kids watch youtube. It's not any different to Cbeebies or a dvd as long as there is a parent keeping an eye to make sure nothing inappropriate comes on.

Maddie Moate has a channel which the 4yo loves where she does stuff like going to a sweet factory and making candy canes or does that flash-freezing thing so she's "like Elsa".

I don't let my 4 and 5 year old on it after they were watching Peppa Pig that had swearing in it!

My 8 year old sister finds it ridiculous and has said to me "why can't they watch it if I'm with them"

To which I reminded her that recently my mum caught her watching videos of people being possessed! It

@Yamumma69
You bumped a 2 year old thread to say that? Reporting.

Surprise surprise the perfect judgy parent brigade are out in force with their faux outrage on this thread.

I made up a "Teeth Cleaning" song and dance for my granddaughter. It worked, she love cleaning her teeth. Be imaginative....

I did this for my kids. They are now all young adults and still remember the words now and it brings back happy memories for them. Much much better than letting them gawp aimlessly at a screen.
