To take cold & flu tablets simply for the caffeine content?

Don't drink caffeinated beverages, really. The odd coke. But I haven't been sleeping well (teething toddler) and cannot seem to catch up with early nights (work) or naps (aforementioned toddler).

I've started taking cold & flu tablets before a shift at work. This isn't a good habit, is it? :(

Pro plus instead?

directsunlight · 25/01/2018 21:53

Never heard of it. Off to Google.

What about some vitamin supplements instead (I’ve heard good things about Busy B from Holland and Barrett)

If not, you would be better off taking caffeine tablets like Pro Plus rather than cold tablets that have other medications in them

Worieddd · 25/01/2018 21:55

Have some pro plus

directsunlight · 25/01/2018 21:55

I'll look into the busy b tablets as well.

Good point about the other medications.

Def don't take the cold and flu tabs if you don't need the pain killing/decongestants aspect. Pro plus all the way!

directsunlight · 25/01/2018 21:58

Any harm in taking pro plus regularly? Are they addictive or would I build a resistance? Hoping I'll get more sleep soon but realistically who knows.

Not good. You could be getting an effect from the phenylephrine as well as the caffeine. If you need caffeine, drink coffee or cola or take pro plus. I wouldn’t put paracetamol and phenylephrine in your system when they’re not needed.

Most cold and flu remedies contain paracetamol. Although it's safe in low doses, an overdose of paracetamol can be fatal, caused by liver failure. The difference between the medicinal dose and the toxic dose is small enough that's it's possible to accidentally OD by using a few different paracetamol - containing products without realising it. Don't risk it. Take caffeine tablets / pro plus separately if you have to. Or at the very least be aware that you've already had a dose of paracetamol that day.

TheGirlWithAllTheFeathers · 26/01/2018 14:07

Cheaper just to buy caffeine tablets.

directsunlight · 27/01/2018 13:20

Thanks everyone. I was definitely being unreasonable. I've bought caffeine tablets from home bargains for less than £1 so I'll turn to them when necessary now.

Not overpriced urine fillers from the cute bunny shop - eat properly. Green tea is the same as standard tea.

And not loads of tablets with paracetamol in unless you can survive with no liver.

Bobbiepin · 27/01/2018 13:31

You will build a resistance to caffiene tablets if you take them regularly. Use only when you really need to.

directsunlight · 27/01/2018 13:33

Point taken, Bobbie.

And I am working on the eating properly bit!

Why on earth wouldn’t you just take pro Plus? Or just have a coffee.

Stickaforkinimdone · 27/01/2018 14:54

Just have a couple of espressos Confused
