AIBU to want to back out?

Ahhhh!!!

I have an internal interview in my school for a ks2 phase leader role working across y3456. This is a role I would love to get my teeth into. However, my last interview was 10 years ago. I’m not the best at selling myself and tend to crumble in a formal setting. I feel like I should drop out now but I feel like I have a chance.

I feel out of the loop when it comes to interviews. I have no idea about the sort of questions I could be asked. The tasks also are a worry as I don’t want to fail at something I know I’d be really good at.

I guess I feel a little out of the loop since returning after having my ds.

Ok so first what do u currently do?
If it's am internal vacancy you much already meet alot of the criteria?
If u ks1 currently then yes it's different but not in manageable.
What is holding u back.?

HeyThatsNotMyName · 25/01/2018 20:56

Currently a class teacher within the phase. I think it’s confidence holding me back and the feeling of failing in front of friends and colleagues.

Interviews are very structured in respect to skills and criteria. They don't usually look over timescales. Unless it involves policy changes. But these can easily be read up on. If u had skills before they are still very relevant. If not more because u can see progress and change. Always use any periods of time off as reflection. It's a new hr thing to show empathy and Emotional Intellegance.

So u have pgce? If so then you just need so go for the interview and research policies of ks2. Also state in the interview ( or even staff room talk) that you are willing to go on courses to aid progression.
You sound like a focuses teacher and just need a confidence boost

Practice, practice, practice! Treat it like an external interview - lots of people don't make much of an effort with an internal interview and it shows. The askamanager.org site has excellent general advice on interviews as well as sample questions.

Get someone to do a mock interview with you, going through your CV like in a real interview. Prepare for the obvious question - depending on your situation, but generally the question you'd rather not be asked (like why did you leave that job after six months or what about this area you don't have much experience in).

Good luck, you can do it!

Is it the managing others that I worry about?

HeyThatsNotMyName · 25/01/2018 21:12

Thank you for the tips! It’s the actual day of the interview that is worrying me. I know I’ll be good at this job. I’m just so scared of the interview as I don’t want to let myself down. It’s against two other colleagues so it makes it more personal.

Have u thought of posting on staffroom forum on here for a detailed help. They may help answer specific criteria.
Go over each essential and desirable crirlteria (or how ever it's now revered to)
And use the STAR technique to answer each.
But if it's a leader role u will need to show people management. I'm sure u will have leaders in school who will help you on this.

When is the interview?

HeyThatsNotMyName · 25/01/2018 21:17

I posted in staffroom but no responses yet. I thought AIBU would have more traffic.
What is the star technique? That’s a new one for me. I’ve been given the advice of talking in threes for each question.

It’s on Wednesday next week.

Ah ok seen update.
Ru more worried against the other internal candidates and relationships afterwards?

Not happened to me but my sister.
A lot of issues of internal politics and unfortunately other candidates got promoted. Even the other candidates were shocked. BUT it didn't harm friendships and they all worked together for 18 months +
All they realised was management wanted a more naive nqt rather than my experienced sister.

Since then out of work friend ships been great and all moved on.

HeyThatsNotMyName · 25/01/2018 21:26

That is part of the reason. But the interview panel of three people are all made up of people I would consider close friends. I would prefer it if it were complete strangers!

Yes it's not easy when friends are involved. The fact u ask for advice shows u care.
Maybe post detailed criteria on the primary or staffroom forum
They may help with up to date info u need to back up your experience.

Good luck

ILovePandas · 25/01/2018 21:55

I would recommend watching YouTube videos of how to answer typical STAR interview questions and think of a few examples where you demonstrated your skills in your current role. Think positive and best of luck OP.

SoozC · 25/01/2018 21:57

If you're on TES have a look at the interview help, a lot of it is really good.

Just remember to sell yourself; often, internal candidates don't get the job because they assume the people they work with will know all the great things the interviewee has done. Treat it as you would an external interview, revise examples for the person spec, think of imaginary situations you may be in and think about ways to handle them etc. It is daunting, but if you prepare well you'll feel a bit better.

Good luck!

AnnieAnoniMouse · 25/01/2018 21:59

Don’t you dare back out! You know you can do the job, just pull up your big girl pants and deal with the interview!

Out of the three of you, do you honestly believe you’re the best candidate for the job?

rosenylund · 25/01/2018 22:04

STAR technique works well, for giving examples, practice before hand :
Situation - what was happening, the problem to be addressed
Task - what did you need to do
Action- what you did and how
Result - what was the outcome, positive, or if negative what could have improved the outcome

HeyThatsNotMyName · 31/01/2018 20:39

Thank you for the advice to all who contributed and took the tome to help and support. I only went and got the job!!!!!!! You’ll never know how much I appreciate each of you.
