Temp dental crown causing me agony.

Posted in here for traffic.

I had root canal and two temp crowns put on my front and canine teeth yesterday after knocking them out in a pedal bike fall. I expected some sort of pain afterwards but I am in agony. Unless I take 800mg Of ibuprofen very 4 hrs the whole of the right side of my face is aching and throbbing. The bite is uncomfortable so hurts if I talk or eat and the front one in particular is just so painful even when touched. I am sat here in tears it hurts so much.

Is this normal? Am I meant to just suck up the pain for two weeks? I get that the temp ones aren't meant to fit perfectly but this is awful. I feel such a idiot for going back to the dentist again...he must think I'm a right hypochondriac (I went back twice in two weeks because of pain in other teeth) am afraid of him saying that's how it'll be and it'll settle down because of the dental work that was done. Sad

I would say by the sound of it you have a abscess or infection but no idea if it could come on that fast if it was only done yesterday

I got a really painful infection after getting s crown but it was 3/4 days later

Of course you should go back. If the teeth have been root treated then that means the nerve has been taken out. So unless you have a Phoenix abscess you shouldn't theoretically have any pain. It's normal for the gum around the tooth to be a bit sensitive for a few days as it's invasive treatment but not to the level you're describing. It's also possible that the temp crowns are just a bit too high and that can cause pain. Either way, if you're worried you should always call.

I got a temporary crown fitted yesterday too! Mine is painful if I chew on it, but otherwise it is okay. Maybe a little uncomfortable. It sounds like you have an infection in it? I would definitely ring the dentist's and tell them about it. I suspect you will need to go back in again.
