175 years in prison

Cauliflowersqueeze · 24/01/2018 22:10

For the gymnasts’ doctor in USA and an assurance from the judge he would not see daylight again.

Meanwhile Worboys out in 9 years from an “indeterminate” sentence.

Why is the UK system so tolerant?

I agree some sentences in the UK are a bit eyebrow raising but I think it's the US that is crazy. What's the point of 175 year? He's never going to live that long anyway.

The American system is indeed crazy - Any sentence beyond a human lifetime is idiotic

MinnieMousse · 24/01/2018 23:25

I presume the sentence is calculated based on the number of offences and he abused an awful lot of women.

I saw a clip on the news of them reading their victim statements to him in court. Very brave women and I'm glad they've finally got justice after years of not being believed.

Namechangetempissue · 24/01/2018 23:26

It is symbolic -so each person assaulted has punishment for the crime committed on them. It may seem mad, but I get it.

saladdays66 · 24/01/2018 23:29

Yes - he’s given a certain number of years for every victim. I know it seems OTT but I like the fact that each victim is acknowledged so feels listened to.

What a bastard.

NickMyLipple · 24/01/2018 23:33

I was talking to my DP about this earlier.

I slightly de-railed by questioning if the sentencing would have been equitable if it was carried out by a male judge?

I noticed it was a female in the case of the gymnast doctor, and wondered if that might have any baring on the overall outcome. I know judges are paid to be equitable and fair but I can't see how personal thoughts, feelings and experiences are just left at the door of the courtroom on sentencing day.

UpstartCrow · 24/01/2018 23:35

People think its the American system that's crazy?
The Judge doesn't decide the sentence, they implement it. A male judge would have handed out the same sentence.

Argeles · 24/01/2018 23:36

The American system, and many other systems in the world are far better than ours.

I’m just waiting to hear what shit excuse for a sentence the scum ‘father’ will get for having stabbed his 8 year old Daughter to death the other day.

The lethal injection would be too good for those of his ilk.

Batmanwearspants · 24/01/2018 23:40

The American system is better than ours? With all those cops getting away with shooting unarmed black civilians and innocent people being put down on death row? Not to mention the appalling way they treat rape cases.

This one example is not evidence that the US has a good legal system. If anything it’s more corrupt than ours.

Birdsgottafly · 24/01/2018 23:45

Argeles up to now it's been reported that he was just made redundant and under a lot of stress.

I like the long sentencing. I like the way China gives sex offenders over a hundred years.

Namechangetempissue · 24/01/2018 23:49

I actually think the death sentence is a let off rather than a punishment. Why should a murderer/serial rapist/paedophile get a peaceful, painless death with a nice meal before hand rather than having to live and face their actions confined for the rest of their life? That is the bigger punishment to me.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 24/01/2018 23:52

I love that each person he abused gets justice. Clear number of years for the specific crime against them. It also ensures that no matter how long he lives, it shall be behind bars.

Good job, judge!

lastkisstoo · 24/01/2018 23:57

The judge really impressed me with her closing speech. I felt it really supportive for the girls who were affected, and ensured the reality of the doctor's fate really hit home with him.

She stated 'It is my honour and privilege to sentence you. You do not deserve to walk outside a prison ever again... I've just signed your death warrant'.

Hopefully this and all of the other cases coming to light will end the seemingly endless entitlement of men in positions of authority.

saladdays66 · 25/01/2018 00:00

Well, with John Worboys being released after only serving 9 years, i’m Not sure we have that much to be proud of with our legal system...

UpstartCrow · 25/01/2018 00:01

Namechangetempissue I was never in favour of the death penalty, but it was hearing about how much Ian Brady hated it and wanted to die that really swung it for me.

MeAndMyDog · 25/01/2018 00:10

In the US, convicts very rarely serve their full sentence. Part of the point of a very long sentence is to keep them in jail.

Judges do make a lot of decisions, but within parameters. There are laws about which offenses the death penalty is an option, which offenses life in prison is an option, ranges of how many years for other offenses.

When a person is convicted of multiple crimes or multiple counts of the same crime, the judge decides if they serve all of those sentences at the same time, or back to back. Back to back which means they serve much longer.

I absolutely believe that the judge being a woman made a difference in this case.

Here is link to another sexual assault case in the US where the judge was a man. The male judge sentenced the perpetrator to 6 months.

The US doesn't have ONE legal system. Every state writes their own laws, has their own prisons. Only certain types of crimes are considered federal crimes and dealt with by the federal government. Some states do much better than others.

AngeloMysterioso · 25/01/2018 00:11

He’d already pleaded guilty, so she was under no obligation to give him an impartial hearing.

Let’s face it, unless he’s in solitary confinement one of the other inmates will probably kill him anyway.

unplugmefromthematrix · 25/01/2018 02:48

Because the UK system does not properly value women and girls traumatic experiences, and often not even the experience of abuse agianst young boys. It is a disgrace. The effects can be a lifelong sentence for the victims, but somehow it is seen as unfair to impose that on the perpetrator.

But part of me also thinks that the cost of incarceration has a lot to do with having short sentences. Anything to save money :(

safariboot · 25/01/2018 03:31

I don't think this particular sentence is unreasonable. It's effectively giving a serial offender a life sentence for crimes that do not attract a life sentence when committed once. I don't see anything wrong in that, at least not when it's crimes against the person.

BitchQueen90 · 25/01/2018 05:56

Honestly I'm not at all keen on the US system. It's overly harsh and their crime levels are still high - clearly the long prison sentences and death penalty don't deter people. I strongly believe that there are only a small percentage of people who need an entire life sentence as I'm more into the idea of rehabilitation.

In these type of cases however I do think life sentences are deserved. John Worboys shouldn't be out in 9 years, that's not right.

Toodee · 25/01/2018 06:36

He sexually assaulted 140+ girls over a number of decades, plus he has already received a 60 year sentence from a different judge on child pornography charges. He deserves to rot in jail, along with all of the other people who created an environment which meant he could get away with this.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/01/2018 06:53

The British legal system has always gave more of a shit about the perpetrators than the victims, and always will do.
Luckily the Americans take no messing.
I'm so envious of their legal system and their anti pussy foot laws. Mind you saying that they don't behave any better over there,do they. It's not like it's a crimeless country, is it.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 25/01/2018 06:57

There is no evidence the US system deters crime. It does not rehabilitate

Silvercatowner · 25/01/2018 07:06

Someone has massively cocked up with the Warboys case.
