Using a charity event for something else.

The organisation I work for has a charity arm which is very well known across the region. It organises a “wear a certain colour on this day for x charity” event and lots of schools and workplaces take part.

DD’s school have just messaged to ask pupils to wear the same colour shirt on the same day for a different charity. AIBU to think that’s not on?!

It’s a bit like having the kids wear Xmas jumpers for Save the children’s Xmas jumper day but collecting money for cancer research!!

I’m not really seeing the problem TBH, as long as they’re open about which charity they’re supporting.

Well charities don't own colours. If it was something like the Ice Bucket Challenge which is for ALS and they were doing it to raise money for something else I'd see your point.

I think it is like the ice bucket challenge, to be honest. Especially as the two charities have very different branding colour wise.

And it’s on the same day. It’s not the charity, it’s the school deciding to send the money raised to something else.

I can’t share the campaign without it being completely outing.

However, if it is acceptable to do this I’m going to propose pinching every major national charity event to find the PTA!

I think this is a bit off tbh: but I may be biased as I have a family member who did lots of work on the StC Christmas jumper day so I get furious when it's hijacked!

I think if they are being transparent it's hard to actually argue with it, but I'd still be tempted to email them a link to the event, and say 'In case you weren't aware, this date AND colour is being very actively promoted by x charity, who I'm involved with, so I'm very aware of their marketing spend/the energy being put into making the event a success. For future events, it might be a good idea to choose a different colour/date to avoid any confusion.' I would want to add 'or accusations of hijacking' but I wouldn't ;-)
