To hate sob stories and if I was doing this I would avoid them

Prob going to get flamed but -
Noticed a few competitions running on Facebook at the moment. There is one for a stay in a cottage and one to win a weekend in a hotel. The people that are running the competitions have asked for the usual tag and share and for people to say what they would do while they are there and they would choose one. Started off great with people saying how they would spend the day in a certain place and then the sob stories started with people saying they are ill or someone they know is ill and that's why they deserve it or that they have had a tough year because of this that and the other and literally begging for this trip away.

Had to laugh at a lady who put she deserved it as her snowman has melted.
Prob going to come across as so heartless but I think everyone could come up with something and if the people running the competitions had asked for why you deserve this weekend away then far enough but they didn't. My DH is in hospital at the moment and we have suffered some heartbreaking bereavements this year but I would not have dreamed of saying this to try and get a weekend away.
So aibu to say if i was running it I would steer away from the sob stories and pick someone else. Runs and ducks under the covers

Some of them seem so badly made up, I need this new bed because my bed got ruined in a flood, and then all my Christmas presents were stolen, and then I broke my leg, and then my cat got run over.

YANBU, YANBU, a thousand times YANBU. God, they make me so uncomfortable reading them, I'm squirming with embarrassment just thinking about it.

SteamyBeignets · 24/01/2018 12:25

YANBU. People are so shameless these days.

JuneBuggy · 24/01/2018 12:54

“I’d love to win this amazing price because my partner has been poorly, my daughter has eczema and my son has asthma, my dog ran away 4 years ago and my cat only has three legs. It’d be a perfect break for our 12.5 year anniversary” + every emoji under the sun.

Urgh. YANBU.

Oh I am so pleased that I've found this thread so that I can share this gem with you...

You may think I'm heartless but it was the 'who is autistic' thrown on the end that really topped it off for me.

It was on a Cadbury competition on Facebook at Christmas.

@Itsthattimeagain his house caught on fire AND his dog died?! Blimey. I seriously wonder if any of that is true. Did you look on her page?

Piffle11 · 24/01/2018 13:12

I've even had this when I've put items on Freecycle - I usually offer it to the first polite person who responds, but sometimes I get a full history about how ill/poor/hard done by they are ... followed by a 'you'll have to deliver it as I can't afford a car/am too sick to leave the house/depressed as the cat died, etc All over a second hand item!

Itsthattimeagain · 24/01/2018 13:18

I didn't must, I'm tempted to trawl through the Cadbury's page now though to check Grin

BalloonSlayer · 24/01/2018 13:21

I have had with a push chair on Freecycle, absolutely desperate for a push chair they were . . . except I was offering two different pushchairs and they only asked for the good one. Wink

Scrumptiousbears · 24/01/2018 13:23

I always ignore the begging requests on freecycle. Simple and polite wins all the time.
