To think that soy sauce has no place on a trifle?

The kikkoman advert, steaks, fish, prawns, sauces - all allowed. But trifle?? Are you all going to tell me that it's a thing now? I've rewound, freeze framed and gone for a closer look, definitely some sort of fruity cream thing with a strawberry on top. Why would you do this?

I think they added it to the melting chocolate to make salted chocolate sauce, and thats what was poured over the icecream - i had to watch a few times though!

nikkylou · 24/01/2018 11:16

TeddyIsaHe · 24/01/2018 11:17

DiplomaticDecorum · 24/01/2018 11:19

Bollocks, that was the dog jumping up. But no, not the add linked above. Is it ice cream? I've changed channels now so can't go back and look.

Its this one I assume

DiplomaticDecorum · 24/01/2018 11:24

Ahhh, maybe a salted caramel thing, they add it to brown in a pan which looks savoury to me but possibly could be caramel? Not convinced though.

No trifle, but I did see a pavlova?

maddiemookins16mum · 24/01/2018 11:49

I put soy sauce (or marmite) in cottage pie though.
I too have never understood the strawberries and balsamic, it tastes awful.

It has to be really, really good balsamic and only a tiny bit used. Try grilling the strawberries after. Or, use reduced balsamic - the caramelly stuff.

A small dab on tomatoes before they are oven roasted also works well.

cakecakecheese · 24/01/2018 12:11

Jelly... goood, custard... goood, soy sauce.... Nope can't do it.

Heston Blumenthal made one using black olives. Madness. No to out there ingredients and yes to more booze.

meredintofpandiculation · 24/01/2018 12:15

Had a great aunt who used to put salt in her custard. That wasn't the biggest of her eccentricities. We didn't eat there often

YetAnotherSpartacus · 24/01/2018 12:17

Was it Aunt Letitia?
