To think this hotel owner was in the right

Why do some people think that it's ok to ask for freebies in return for a few blog posts these days? How about the novel concept of getting off the internet, getting a job and actually paying for stuff?!

Am I showing my age and being hopelessly old fashioned, or is this just someone being really cheeky. It's not as if she's Kim sodding Kardashian and would really raise the profile (although to be fair KK would put me off!!).

I think they are both idiots.

The fish-lipped blogger is not entirely inaccurate when she says that this is sort of how things are done, so what's the surprise. For years journalists would review places and be given free accommodation, cars etc to review such places, so the owner of the hotel is wrong to highlight this freebie aspect as being completely alien and a blogger-only phenomena.

But she was clearly just after a Valentine's freebie for her and her boyfriend and any review would be an afterthought. She doesn't have a name in the industry, her opinions are not sought after, she is not knowledgeable, she's obviously a complete waste of space and is an airhead. So in that regard, I can agree with the owner.

Both come off as tools though. No respect for either.

MadyaunMylford · 23/01/2018 11:43

funny how her 'esposed' video is now her most popular video at nearly 2 million views told you DRAMA is the best way on |Yootoob :)_

PoorYorick · 23/01/2018 11:48

I think they are both idiots.

I think they're both pretty smart. Based on the analysis by that PR expert (the one Stenson used for his 'invoice'), they've both got millions of euros' worth of free advertising and have each seen uplifts in their social media followers.

dustarr73 · 23/01/2018 12:26

She isn't asking for freebies, she is pitching her business and asking for payment (in non monetary form) for a service. The hotel declined it (as would I given this kind of naff sales pitch).

She was after a freebie, she does Primark and make up usually. And to be fair what kind of sap uses Orlando World Florida as proof. Its not exactly on its bones of its arse.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 23/01/2018 12:36

See Rebecca Nobody wants to see that he is as good, if not better, than this social media thing than she is!

So many "He's a bully / he exposed her to bullying" comments. When he didn't, she did that herself!

As Shatner pointed out, MN is not on trend with this one Grin

iskegness · 23/01/2018 12:44

Plenty of people have recognised that she outed herself and he bullied. It's not mutually exclusive.

You can be good at social media while also being unpleasant, again not ME.

CuppaTeaTime2 · 23/01/2018 12:49

The whole thing about him (is it Paul?) saying that he'll get lots of business etc. from all of this. He may do initially but he'll actually have to provide a good service to customers to secure repeat business. Social media isn't going to get people to continually return to his hotel. He needs to be focussing on his hotel service now, especially as a lot of older reviews are not good.

Rebeccaslicker · 23/01/2018 12:50

Skegness, in fact you said that people dislike her for being young and attractive. That misses the point so badly that it's quite scary. You ignored the flaws in her approach and "business model" and assumed people are just jealous. It's a very odd assumption to have made.

OP posts:
iskegness · 23/01/2018 12:54

Young attractive girls do get a lot of hate and lots of it probably comes from jelousy, that's nothing new.

Rebeccaslicker · 23/01/2018 12:56

(Although the attractive point is interesting in itself. She's not remotely attractive to me - nothing to do with her actual self, but everything to do with what she's done with that trout pout and her makeup. She'd be so much more attractive without it, but I guess that's also the fashion these days. I'm on a train at the moment and there's a young woman sitting opposite me who is truly jaw droppingly stunning. I'd have given anything to look like that when I was in my early 20's. But she's totally natural; not a hint of orange spray tan or massive painted eyebrows or a huge pair of vaselined trout lips in sight!)

Skegness, in fact you said that people dislike her for being young and attractive.

Based on most of the comments I've seen, I think people dislike her for not being naturally as pretty as they imagine a beauty blogger would be. Lots of nasty comments about her appearance.

Stenson also seems to be doing well enough in his business. It's been successful for many years and he makes enough to take the staff to Disneyland Paris as a Christmas treat. As awful as he is on the internet, I can actually imagine him being good to work for; I can see him running a tight but informal ship where people's roles are clear and they are rewarded for doing their jobs well. I can't see him tying people up in red tape or being in any way unclear about what he expects from them.

I did think the comment about charging corkage to breastfeeding mothers was kind of funny (I breastfed). If I had breastfed my baby in his cafe, I don't believe for one second he'd have actually given me any trouble.

I was on his side until the invoice. Before that, he had a point which he made sardonically and without identifying the blogger. Now, he's just being a dick for the sake of it.

Young attractive girls

Are we still talking about this thread...?

do get a lot of hate and lots of it probably comes from jelousy, that's nothing new.

Jealousy for someone who looks like a fish and acts like an idiot really doesn't exist here. Hmm

iskegness · 23/01/2018 12:58

Flaw in her buisness model? She's gained thousands of subs, video views up 250% and ad income alone for this month is £3-4k Hmm

iskegness · 23/01/2018 13:00

More posts being critical and unpleasant on her appearance, suprise suprise. Brew

Rebeccaslicker · 23/01/2018 13:03

I think the problem is that if you put yourself out there to be famous, and you want to make a living from just that, comments will come with the territory in a way that they wouldn't with other people. It kind of goes with the job, if you want the public to be interested in you. You are the product that you are selling, after all.

That being said, of course there is a line - or many lines - and they get crossed all the time by keyboard warriors. So for example she claims people have wished cancer on her; that's clearly way out of line and a massively dickish thing to do, if it's true.

OP posts:
ShatnersWig · 23/01/2018 13:03

As a man, I don't find her attractive. That's a statement of fact rather than a personal attack. I certainly wouldn't bring her appearance into any discussion of her behaviour.

PoorYorick · 23/01/2018 13:03

As a man, I don't find her attractive.

So frigging what?

dustarr73 · 23/01/2018 13:04

I have food in his cafe.It was really rather nice.Staff were friendly/I have never met him.

PoorYorick · 23/01/2018 13:06

So for example she claims people have wished cancer on her; that's clearly way out of line and a massively dickish thing to do, if it's true.

Oh it'll be true, in fact it'll be the milder comments. A few years ago the fashionable way to wish someone dead on the internet was to tell them to 'die in a fire', later the vogue became 'kill yourself' (to be fair, this was a line from a famous comedy stand up routine and it got taken completely out of context; the guy was making fun of people who work in marketing and was absolutely not seriously encouraging anyone to take their own lives) and now it's 'get cancer'. I can't wait to see what these brilliant minds come up with next.

She'll have received rape and death threats galore, no doubt.

iskegness · 23/01/2018 13:07

No one's saying comments aren't fair game. They are saying possible reasons behind the comments. Two different things.

This whole story is just aimed at the average dailymail reader that has a penchant for saying snowflake.

Rebeccaslicker · 23/01/2018 13:07

Ah, so now it was a deliberate strategy to increase revenue was it??! Make up your mind Elle, sorry, I mean skegness.

The terrible research on the target and the timing of the request make it quite clear - she simply picked somewhere she fancied spending Valentine's Day for free. Then she wrote a pretty unprofessional email asking for the freebie. If she'd asked for free pink makeup for that perfect Valentine's Day look, it might actually have gone with her brand. Do you think even she believed that her followers were likely to go and spend a lot of money at this hotel?!

ShatnersWig · 23/01/2018 13:09

Yorick I said that because another poster is suggesting that people who don't side with the blogger are doing so because they are jealous of her being either a) young or b) attractive or both. I am therefore pointing out that my not siding with her has nothing to do with her personal appearance and that I wouldn't use that as a stick to bash someone with as another poster has suggested. I'd have thought that was pretty obvious.

I also can't take skegness seriously with those comments bearing in mind she actually started a thread on AIBU entitled "AIBU to find fearne cotton annoying" and then slag her off over four pages because she is young and dim. Ahem. Pot. Kettle.

Rebeccaslicker · 23/01/2018 13:11

Actually I partly disagree on the attractive comments not being fair game - but ONLY because and insofar as she markets herself as a beauty Vlogger.

So comments saying that she looks really unnatural and sets a bad example for young girls with her pouty overmadeup selfies and would look much better in a more natural state would be commenting on her business and brand, for example. Whereas stupid comments calling her ugly or worse are just stupid and anyone posting that sort of shit is just trying to be rude and hurtful.

OP posts:
CuriousaboutSamphire · 23/01/2018 13:12

skeggy I have been saying that he appears to an unpleasant person on social media, but that I don't know him, since page 1. I have balanced that with my observation, and explanation why I think that she is a lazy blogger. I have consistently said that they are as bad / good as each other.

And making observational comments on his character as are unpleasant as any about her appearance, isn't it?

PoorYorick · 23/01/2018 13:12

Nope, still utterly irrelevant that you are a man and find her unbangable in your manly opinion. There are very, very, very few situations in which this will be relevant information. On MN, you can safely assume there will be none at all.

I don't think she was pleased when the hotelier publicised the email and his response, but she was definitely smart to identify herself and capitalise on all the additional coverage. She will make a few grand from this before she retreats back into her cave.
