Highinthesky Its abit of a stretch to say one bruise is ITP. OP could just as easily have bashed her knuckle on bedside table whilst thrashing around with a high temp.

Ohshit.
As I remember ITP is like an allergic reaction to a virus. Your platelets don’t stick together properly so you bleed easily and you get bruises and a weird dark blotchy rash - usually on your legs as I’ve seen it. I think it’s often just monitored rather than treated.
It’s a possibility OP - seeing as you have had heavy periods in the past you might be a bit that way inclined anyhow but I’d wait and see if you develop more extensive bruises or rashes.
Hope you’ve got someone there bringing drinks etc etc.

Actually what is ITP? Do I need to get treatment for it or is it just something that goes away by itself? Thanks

I’ve had the B type influenza this year. Ashamed to say I didn’t have a flu jab. I’m a clinician, I should know better but no colleague in surgery at same time as me this year ( in the past I’ve done my own though :)
Anyhow, my husband, who did have his jab didn’t get it so serves me right.

Happinessfinder · 23/01/2018 01:12

Thanks nursy hopefully that’s what I did however it’s a funny angle o. The photo. The mark is on the inner side of my finger (the side where it can touch the next finger along) sorry for the rubbish description. So I’m not sure how I could have damaged it? Although it’s always a possibility x

I will try harder to get everyone vaccinated next year. I had no luck with pharmacies giving dd a vaccination I tried boots and Lloyd’s but they said no. I stupidly thought it would be ok as the smaller ones were vaccinated.

I had the flu jab. I’m on week 4 of this flu virus now. I’m still sweating, coughing and feel constantly sick. But at least I’ve managed to get out of bed this week. The worst case of flu I’ve ever had

jack2001 · 23/01/2018 06:26

@Happinessfinder if you're on blood clotting medication then I'd definitely have that finger checked out

UnimaginativeUser · 23/01/2018 07:31

Hopefully not this, but worth getting yourself checked out, especially with the finger. On my phone so not sure if the link will work but if it doesn’t google NHS Sepsis - www.nhs.uk/conditions/sepsis/#sepsis-symptoms-in-older-children-and-adults

A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with it and his symptoms were v similar to yours. Rather than a bruised finger though he had bloodshot eyes.

Sepsis is so commonly misdiagnosed, especially at a time of year where flu is so prevalent.

Dh and I started on 30th December and have been ill off and on ever since. Painful cough, sore throat, fluctuating temperature, terrible lethargy. Dh also has very low bp and has been given antibiotics. Some days I can’t lift my head off the pillow and others I can just about function.
We both had flu jabs. I can’t see this ending.

ZoopDragon · 23/01/2018 07:46

Spider bite?

oldbirdy · 23/01/2018 07:55

I know more than I would like about ITP as my son has it.
It's not an allergic reaction, nursy, it's an immune system over reaction, often secondary to a virus. The spleen mistakes platelets for the virus and the body begins attacking and destroying its own platelets.

It's fairly benign in itself, it doesn't make you feel ill, but the platelets can get so low that you begin spontaneously bleeding. My DS was fine at 5pm and at 10 was bleeding from the gums, nose, covered in bruises on his legs and had pettichiae all down his legs (the scary non blanching rash). His platelets were 1 when I got him to hospital, and zero the next morning. They are meant to be between 150 and 400. The problem is that you risk internal bleeding and any minor bump to the head could cause a brain bleed, which wouldn't be fun.

In children it tends to be acute, (happen fast and resolve within months), in adults it tends to be more chronic.

Tainbri · 23/01/2018 08:20

Are you absolutely sure you haven't been bitten by something? Could be coincidence and flu like others have said but keep an eye on the "bruise".

angieloumc · 23/01/2018 10:19

Superdrug do the flu jab/nasal spray (if they have it in) for children. My DD age 13 has just had it, costing £9.99.

Happinessfinder · 25/01/2018 12:10

Just to update I’m on day 6 and am still stuck in bed feeling dreadful. However the strange mark has disappeared. It started off dark purple /black (looked like ink) and then turned like the pic and then faded away within 12hrs. I thought if I’m still ill tomorrow then will go to my gp and mention the mark. Thanks for all of the suggestions Flowers

I'm on day 4. The first two days were the worst I've ever felt.

I'm still bed bound, pouring with sweat but I'm actually sitting up which feels like I've climbed a mountain.
