i'm in my very early 40s and my periods are now bonkers, I was always heavy and a good 7-8 days long. However my body seems to want to shift it all in 2 days, I wear 2 fat night time towels, pants, shorts, leggings and loose jeans and still have to change at least once an hour often am too late and goes through. I am assuming it maybe perimenopause and this nightmare will end soon.

Go to your dr. My gynaecologist said I don’t need to suffer so she has asked my dr to prescribe something. Haven’t had dr app yet so can’t remember what it was she’s requested.

YesitsJacqueline · 22/01/2018 20:05

I've always had bad periods down to endometriosis but as I get older they are getting heavier.
Dr prescribed mefanamic acid and I agree they really help. You have to take them just before your period starts for them to work properly and keep taking them regularly all the Way through.

apostropheuse · 22/01/2018 20:17

I had horrific periods like you OP. I was in my early thirties. The GP gave me tranexamic acid and it changed my life beyond measure. I did have a fairly large fibroid at the top of my womb, which was discovered when I was sterilised aged 30, but was told it would probably shrink when I went through the menopause.

I had an early menopauase - my last period was the day after my 38th birthday. Thank goodness.

LizzieSiddal · 22/01/2018 20:21

I had this. Gp sent me fir a scan but nothing was wrong there so I was given Tranexamic acid. It is very good but I still have a heavy first day as it takes half a day for the tablets to really kick in. I would recommend them though.

elliejjtiny · 22/01/2018 20:24

I have periods like that. Tranexamic acid helps and incontinence pants have meant I can now leave the house on day 2 and 3 of my period for the first time in years!

thenettyprofessor · 22/01/2018 20:43

think i will invest in those pants

it's not that likely to be The Change, but may well be A Change common in women in their 30s and 40s, charmingly names 'dysfunctional uterine bleeding'.
See your GP, lots of things can be done about it.

So, YABU to put up with a period that traps you in your house Wink
YANBU to be utterly fed up with this nonsense.

Katedotness1963 · 22/01/2018 20:47

I'm mid fifties, and yes, I stay home the first couple of days of my period now. Funnily enough, when I first started getting my period the first two days were a nightmare too. I guess I've gone full circle?

KatyN · 22/01/2018 21:01

I had shockers like this. Then I had an endometrial ablation. The difference is uncanny.
I’m 40 and have 2 children.

Allthewaves · 22/01/2018 21:21

I flood the first couple of days. Iv found 800mg of ibuprofen on morning works wonders

DameSquashalot · 22/01/2018 21:44

I flood and pass clots for the first two days. Just found out I’ve got a fibroid. Gynae suggested the cool, so I will think about it. I’d like to use a mooncup, I would fill it within seconds.

DameSquashalot · 22/01/2018 21:44

coil

Momo18 · 22/01/2018 21:47

Are you on blood thinners? Happened to me one cycle I had them.

stickytoffeevodka · 22/01/2018 21:52

I had this and tranexamic was a life-saver. Go to your GP and insist on something being done!

travellerexpat · 22/01/2018 21:53

Sounds like me when I had a fibroid aged about 43.
I had tranexamic acid, norethisterone, and then eventually a blood transfusion and a hysterectomy.
You will definitely need iron supplements and really an ultrasound to see what's going on.

Poppyred85 · 22/01/2018 22:00

Hello...delurking GP here...this definitely warrants a trip to your GP who may want to do an internal examination, blood tests or send you for a scan. While aroud 50% of women no physical abnormality is found, that does not man you have to put up with such heavy, intrusive bleeding. There are a number of treatment options from tablets you take on the heavy days, to a type of coil called a Mirena, to surgical treatments (although as a general rule gynaecologists like you to have tried less invasive treatments first). You might find it helpful to look at this patient.info/health/periods-and-period-problems/heavy-periods-menorrhagia
Good luck!

Aridane · 22/01/2018 22:02

YABU - get thee to a GP!

Bonjovispyjamas · 22/01/2018 22:10

I used to have periods from hell, flooding, passing blood clots that got bigger every month,i had to wear tampons and sanitary towels and still had to change them every half an hour!I was scared to go to sleep at night because of the horror I'd wake up to!After tests, scans etc that found nothing wrong my gynocologist suggested the mirena coil to control them,I've never looked back, going from that hell to no periods at all has been absolute bliss, getting the coil was the best thing I've done,I can honestly say it changed my life!

eurochick · 22/01/2018 22:14

I think you should see a go, but in the meantime a mooncup might help. You'll probably want to wear a towel as well but they hold a lot more than other sanpro.

eurochick · 22/01/2018 22:14

*gp, not go, thanks iPad.

pickleofficer · 22/01/2018 22:32

I had the Cavatherm like @KatyN. Periods were horrendous (just used incontinence pads as nothing else worked). Now, I have nothing! Am 39, with four kids.

octonaught · 23/01/2018 00:38

DO NOT use a mooncup. I had horrendous bleeding and thought the same. Couldn't get it out. DP tried. my GP & then eventually an emergency gynaecologist. the floor of his consulting room looked like an abbatoir; I was so embarassed

Onlyoldontheoutside · 23/01/2018 01:02

I appreciate that mooncups are good butfor the kind of bleeding were talking about they are hopeless.Appart from the flow the clots dwarf a cup.
Thankfully my periods have just about stopped.Just before they did last year I bled continuosly, just when you thought it had stopped, flooding again.I slept on large incontinence sheets to protect the bed and was getting up every couple of hours to change.Work was a nightmare and I once drive in,got out of car, flooded and had to drive back home sitting on a carrier bag to change.

GrockleBocs · 23/01/2018 01:07

Mine went berserk in my early 40s. I was lucky to last 30 minutes without flooding an Ultra tampon & maternity pad in the first 72 hours.
An ablation took me from that to no periods at all.

mari652 · 23/01/2018 01:18

I had horrendous flooding periods in my late 40s - a friend had had these before her periods stopped and persuaded me that this was a temporary normal. After my periods stopped ( hurrah !) I had a some prolapse symptoms and had a internal ultrasound as part of the tests. The ultrasound operator commented that she could see I had had some big fibroids, but that they had now shrunk. That was what had been causing the unholy hell of bleeding. Go to the GP.
