Do you believe in Ghosts?

Just interested in peoples thoughts really. Had a couple of experiences myself. 1st was when my Mums BF passed away her DD was staying with us at the time. It was the middle of the night and I remember feeling like the BF was in my bedroom looking for DD. I said "She's in my Mum's room x". In the morning got up to the news that BF had passed away in the night. Mum then told me how BF's DD had woken in the night and said "Mummy!" like she'd seen her. She was only 6/7 at the time.

2nd time was when I was in my late 20's I was really struggling to sleep and feeling quite distressed (can't remember why) I said aloud to nobody in particular "please help me, I just want to sleep" a White Light appeared in my bedroom and I suddenly felt so comforted and relaxed. I fell asleep almost immediately.

Anybody got any stories?

I've seen a fair few.

Worked nights in nursing homes for years though. Only ever seen one outside of the workplace.

They're not that interesting. They don't 'do' anything!

yawning801 · 22/01/2018 18:21

I have seen one, but the tale is way too outing as I tell it every time my grandma comes up in conversation!

KimmySchmidt1 · 22/01/2018 18:26

No. I just don't think it is possible that they could exist and there still, after thousands of years, be absolutely no evidence of them.

I saw my dad's body after he died and that confirmed for me that there is nothing soooky or spiritual out there or around us. He was just dead and gone.

SwimmingInLemonade · 22/01/2018 18:36

I love ALL the woo threads here and elsewhere (does anyone else love the spooky stories on jezebel.com?) and unless EVERYONE is telling whoppers, I think you'd be hard-pressed to read very many of them and still conclude that there's nothing beyond what we currently understand. Maybe it's some kind of weird "recording" which gets replayed? I think the more open-minded we are, the more likely it is that one day science will be abel to address it and explain it, other than just "it's your imagination".

What about all the people who see a vision of someone and LATER find out that person had just died? Or the stories you hear of someone being spooked by a ghost in a hotel / workplace and when they tell the staff, everyone is totally nonchalant and just says "Oh yeah, that's Fred"?

TreacleBoo · 22/01/2018 18:43

But if ghosts were real & your family member was visiting why would they bang a door, flicker a light, etc? Surely if they had the power to do that they would make a more obvious indication that they were there rather than something so vague? I do believe in them to a certain extent, I just don’t understand why they wouldn’t make them self more known lol

WhooooAmI24601 · 22/01/2018 18:47

I don't believe in them but I also don't disbelieve people who've sene or felt them; I just don't know enough either way.

I love reading woo stories on here, though, they're so exciting.

EastMidsMummy · 22/01/2018 18:48

All ghosts are just Mad Jennings the janitor in a rubber mask. Did you never watch Scooby Doo?

EastMidsMummy · 22/01/2018 18:49

Of course I don’t believe in ghosts. Ghosts aren’t real.

Lostflipflop · 22/01/2018 19:10

My friend was convinced he lived in a haunted flat, all the usual goings on, bumps in the night and things being moved.

He set up a camera to record what was happening.

It was his cat!

falang · 22/01/2018 19:16

No of course not. All sightings etc can be explained by imagination, suggestion and coincidence. I find it really funny that people think they exist.

Mummalovex · 22/01/2018 19:25

Yes.

I have have many experiences and they aren't pleasant at all.

VerbenaGirl · 22/01/2018 19:28

No. But I do sometimes feel the presence of my DF who died 20 plus years ago - but in a very nice comforting way.

BertrandRussell · 22/01/2018 19:30

Any paranormal event that’s properly investigated turns out to have a perfectly rational explanation.

Storminateapot · 22/01/2018 19:32

I do because I have seen one, many times over the years in my very old childhood home, Generally seen in daylight too, as it happens. The whole family saw him. There was no pattern, there could be a few instances quite close together then a year could go by. He never did anything, was just there.

My Mum has since sold the house and the new owners have told her they see him too.

They also see a little jack Russell dog running around - he was ours when I was a child.

I don't know what ghosts are. I don't necessarily believe they are sentient spirits, stone tape theory seems quite plausible to me. I do, however, believe that the millions of people who have experienced the phenomena are not all idiots and liars or somehow incapable of rational thought.

mrsharrison · 22/01/2018 20:01

I think i saw my late ex boyfriend in my house one day. It was so fleeting that i can't swear 100%. I know people who claim to have seen ghosts of their loved ones and i believe them.
But i always wanted to see for myself. When i did see this human form i then doubted myself.

Oldsu · 22/01/2018 20:04

I didn't before Christmas and TBH I am still not sure if I do, so I will tell my story and let you good people decide whether or not I had an 'encounter' here goes.

Sometimes when I am bored I watch those ghost hunting programmes just for a laugh, there's one with a group of young guys who are supposed to be experienced ghost hunters but run from the room squealing like little girls if they hear a bonk or a voice.

Anyway I was telling a new colleague and it turns out she is a believer and takes it very seriously, she invited me to a 'lockdown' at a local manor with a group of ghost hunters so I thought why not.

I disliked the group leader as soon as I met her, one of those bullying queen bee types who I really don't like.

We had a walk round before the actual lock down, there was only our group no-one else about, as we were walking down the main strairs I stopped to look at the lovely carving on the stair case, the leader called up to me 'oh DO try and keep up' I just muttered quietly ' I really don't like you' as soon as I did there was a voice in my ear that said 'neither do I' there was no-one next to me yet I hear that voice as plain as anything, in fact I was so startled I nearly fell down the rest of the stairs earning me a filthy look from the group leader.

We stayed all night and apart from a few bonks and something thinking they saw a black mist nothing else happened.

I didn't mention anything to the group but my colleague spoke to me when back at work she was so apologetic that nothing had happened that I had to tell her, now of course she thinks I might a 'sensitive' and wants me to go on other outings but I am really not sure

Did I hear I ghost possibly, possibly not but I DID hear a voice that responded to my statement and I don't know who or what it was

EastMidsMummy · 22/01/2018 20:09

I don’t think anyone who thinks they’ve seen a ghost is a liar or an idiot, Storminateapot. I’m sure many are genuinely reporting what they think they’ve seen, even though they are obviously wrong because there are no such thing as ghosts.

Anyone who thinks “stone tape theory” is a thing is a fucking idiot of the highest order, though.

EastMidsMummy · 22/01/2018 20:11

Ok, you didn’t have an ‘encounter’ because there is no such things as ghosts. HTH.

I had no contact with my father for at least 10 years. One sunny afternoon in July I was in the kitchen when the temperature suddenly dropped. I also felt like I was standing in a strong breeze. I knew someone was standing behind me and when I turned round it was my father telling me he had just died and was so sorry how things had turned out This only lasted seconds. I was not told that he had died until the following day. His time of death was 3pm. This was the time he appeared in my kitchen.

mrsharrison · 22/01/2018 20:17

User that is amazing.

MayLeaveADentInYourSofa · 22/01/2018 20:26

Yes.

I saw ghosts in my childhood home. Same ghosts, numerous times and I was the only person who could see them. They would brush past me and they felt icy cold.

As an adult I saw the ghost of a relative of my DH who died before I knew him. Transpired I was in the room in which she died and previously other people had claimed to see her there.

However, I can't get my head around dead people just appearing. The idea that someone who has died can still appear doesn't make sense.
