AIBU to think the term 'bus wankers' is a piss take out of bus users themselves?

As the title says really. I've heard people comment (and read fb posts) about how they are having to join the 'bus wankers' as their car is off the road, or are having to 'be a bus wanker' for the day because they don't want to drink/drive etc, as well as other reasons.
I understand that this is a quote from the inbetweeners, however, I don't know if people are just referring to the actual 'bus' itself being a 'wanky' thing to have to go on, OR if those people who make this comment actually believe bus users are 'low lives' or 'beneath them' because they don't use a car like the commenters do iyswim?
I drive, although I have friends and family members who regularly use the buses, including my oap parents and my student dd. I would hate to think people are taking the piss out of them (and other decent people like them) just because they catch a bus!

Does anyone else find this term insulting or am I stupidly taking this way out of context, when its not really aimed at bus users in general?

Why are you keen to defend the idea of someone being called a 'wanker' in public by a stranger?

Again!! You're obviously a habitual "over thinker" - I'm not defending anything, I'm just "meh" about the whole thing & fail to get the slightest bit enraged......

In cities, all sorts of people use the bus for heaven’s sake! It is far easier than driving given that there are bus lanes and buses zoom right by the lines of traffic and the frustrated drivers.

Commuters from outside cities will often now choose Park and Ride rather than face standing squashed up on an already crowded train.

However, that said, sometimes you get a range of odours in buses and you don’t quite know the sources... You worry it might be the seat you’re sitting on. Buses travelling though certain affluent areas are always fine. Sad really.

RoseWhiteTips · 23/01/2018 12:14

Just to add, again, The Inbetweeners is funny and juvenile. People who use the term “bus wankers” are just using a catch phrase and are not being offensive.
It’s a bit like saying innit or my bad or any number of inane things.

JenniferL90 · 23/01/2018 12:23

Yes it manes that people taking the bus are the "bus wankers"

If my husband has to get a bus I call him a bus wanker! As he does me.

But I have never actually really thought less of someone who uses a bus......I love a bit of public transport.

It's just a funny thing to say.

MuckySockSyndrome · 29/03/2018 11:40

Peasant wagon is worse

Mightymucks · 29/03/2018 11:44

People that use the quote seriously are kind of missing the point that the person who said it in the inbetweeners is a complete cock.

Coconutandcoriander · 29/03/2018 11:45

I blame the Conservative government for this.

“A man who, beyond the age of 26, finds himself on a bus can count himself as a failure.”
Margaret Thatcher, 1986

MuckySockSyndrome · 29/03/2018 11:46

Did she really say that??

Sparklingbrook · 29/03/2018 11:47

I have never heard the expression 'peasant wagon'.

Coconutandcoriander · 29/03/2018 11:47

There’s some debate, but some sources say she did

MuckySockSyndrome · 29/03/2018 11:49

Peasant wagon gets used a lot - now that is sneering at the bus wankers.

Mightymucks · 29/03/2018 11:50

No she didn’t say that. It’s apocryphal. No reliable source.

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 29/03/2018 11:53

Why are you keen to defend the idea of someone being called a 'wanker' in public by a stranger?

Clemmie, Simon, is that you?!

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 29/03/2018 11:54

Of all the stuff on the Inbetweeners, 'bus wankers' has to be firmly at the bottom of the list of things to be offended by!

MuckySockSyndrome · 29/03/2018 11:55

Bumder

DrFoxtrot · 29/03/2018 12:04

I once had to print something out at the library as I have no printer at home and was called a ‘library wanker’ Blush Grin

It’s a quote from a tv show, anybody using it is copying the joke, I’m sure they don’t really think people who take the bus are actual wankers.

JaneJeffer · 29/03/2018 12:05

Isn't everyone a wanker?

Lethaldrizzle · 29/03/2018 12:07

Its not massively offensive but neither is it funny. It is a really wanky thing to say. People who choose public transport over driving are definitely not wankers. I'm more likely to use the phrase 'four wheel drive tossers', or something along those lines.

DeliberatelyAwkward · 29/03/2018 12:46

Mumsnet fwend had me spitting tea!

Ooooh don’t forget the thumbs up!

Thishatisnotmine · 29/03/2018 12:49

I don't drive. I jokingly say to dh that I am a bus wanker and he jokes back that he is outraged that I am turning our dc into bus wankers. He has to keep driving them around in his lovely car to show them how things should be!

KingLooieCatz · 29/03/2018 12:57

I love being a bus wanker. When I meet people who spend as long trying to find a parking space as I did on the entire journey, I try not to feel superior. If you then roam slightly, they have to trek back to whichever godforsaken spot they left the car in the first place. I just hop on at the nearest convenient stop. And never have to book an MOT again. Where I live, 5 minutes would be a long wait. Totally spoiled.

Sarahh2014 · 29/03/2018 13:03

That's made me want to watch the Inbetweeners now 😁

IntoTheFloodAgain · 29/03/2018 13:07

Bumder

😂😂😂

IanRushesInadequateFlushes · 29/03/2018 13:07

If I'm driving, people on the bus are bus wankers. If I'm on the bus, people in cars are gas guzzling traffic creating planet destroying wankers. Cyclists are just wankers.

Basically I'm really impatient and really unpleasant about being stuck in traffic, and the sooner back to the future hover boards are an actual thing, the better!!!

Lethaldrizzle · 29/03/2018 13:11

Ian - the best thing to beat the traffic is a bicycle!
